Wednesday, January 19th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Chicago Bulls playing for the second time this season. Cleveland won 115-92 in the squads first meeting and as Central Division rivals will play twice more – – once in Chicago on March 12th and wrap up the season series in Cleveland on March 26th.
The Bulls played in Memphis on MLK Jr. day losing to the Grizzlies to extend the losing streak to four games in a row while the Cavaliers beat the Nets 114-107.
Last season the clubs played three times with Cleveland taking two of the three contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record with 129 wins in 223 matches versus the Cavaliers.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The win streak is now at five with the Cavs also collecting victories in seven of their last nine matches. Their recent six-game road trip was highly successful with wins in five of the six contests. Granted, their opponents were primarily lower-tier clubs but they also collected an impressive win versus the Jazz.
Cleveland returned home to play what is considered the hardest game – the first game back home after a lengthy road trip. But successfully defeated the Nets which also marked the first game Kevin Durant missed since straining his MCL.
While the focus was on the Nets backcourt of James Harden and Kyrie Irving it was Cavs point guard Darius Garland who stood out with a double-double of 22 points and 12 assists along with six rebounds, and two steals although he also coughed up the ball an uncharacteristic six times.
Jarrett Allen also posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Okoro (15), Lauri Markkanen (14), Kevin Love (14), and Evan Mobley (12) were the other double-digit contributors.
Although the Nets shot 40 percent from deep and won fast break scoring (13 to 11) the Cavs pummeled them in the paint (54-34), won the glass battle (40-35) and in an oddity had more turnovers (16 to 14) than Brooklyn but were more successful converting them into 22 points versus 13.
Lamar Stevens (knee) was downgraded to out and Rajon Rondo (hamstring) is also out Wednesday. Ricky Rubio (ACL) and Collin Sexton (knee) are lost for the season.
Chicago Bulls
The losing streak has reached four games with the loss to the Grizzlies and marked their fifth loss in six games representing a third of their losses this season (15). Chicago looked lethargic for most of the match with Nikola Vucevic recent improved play having gone AWOL.
Time and again he was caught flat-footed, ball watching or not competing against his matchup for positioning in the paint. DeMar DeRozan did his best to keep the Bulls in the match leading the scoring with 24 points but without Lonzo Ball or Alex Caruso, the defensive regression is obvious.
One bright spot has been the play of rookie Ayo Dosunmu who turned 22 on Monday. He delivered a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds adding six assists, five steals, and two blocks plus was a key defender on Ja Morant especially early in the match.
Coby White (16), Troy Brown Jr. (14), Matt Thomas (13), and Malcolm Hill (12) were the other double-figure contributors.
Alex Caruso (conditioning) was upgraded to probable, Tyler Cook (ankle) is questionable, while Lonzo Ball (knee) and Zach LaVine (knee) were downgraded to out on Wednesday. Javonte Green (groin) and Derrick Jones Jr. (knee) are out indefinitely. Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The teams are 5-5 in their last 10 meetings against each other
- The Cavaliers are 6-4 ATS in the last 10 matches against the Bulls
- The over/under is 4-6 in the teams last 10 head to head matches
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction
The next 12 games for the Bulls is an even mix of lottery and elite teams but to retain their top position they’ll need to rediscover the defensive prowess they displayed early in the season. If Caruso plays that will help but facing the lengthy Cavs will pose major issues especially if Vucevic continues to struggle.
