Friday, February 4th the Cleveland Cavaliers play the Charlotte Hornets for the third of four matches this season. The squads have each won once with the Hornets winning on October 22nd (123-112) and Cleveland taking the November 1st contest (113-110).
The Cavaliers will host the final meeting between the clubs on March 2nd. Both teams last played on Wednesday with the Cavaliers losing 104-115 to the Rockets and the Hornets losing 107-113 to the Celtics.
Last season, the squads played three times with Cleveland winning two of the three contests. The Cavaliers hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 70 of their 117 matches.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Although the Cavaliers’ schedule has turned to an easier strength of schedule they’ve lost two of their last three contests. Part of that may be tied to the typical dog days of winter and the absence of starting point guard Darius Garland.
The biggest difference without Garland is the lack of playmaking.
Cleveland made an effort to come back versus the Rockets but failed to close out the match. Rookie Evan Mobley led the way for his squad with a career-best 29 points via his double-double that included 12 rebounds.
Veteran Kevin Love tried to help shoulder the load also posting a double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds. Five Cavaliers scored in double-figures including Cedi Osman (13), Isaac Okoro (11), and Jarrett Allen (11).
Darius Garland (back) missed the last two games and is out Friday. Lauri Markkanen (ankle) is out indefinitely while Sexton and Rubio are both lost for the season due to knee injuries.
Charlotte Hornets
The race in the East is much tighter than it is in the West and the outcomes of a few games on Wednesday made it even more cramped. At the top, there are five teams fighting for the top seed and within 1.5 points of each other.
The Nets fell to the next level down in the middle with their sixth consecutive loss joining the trio of the Raptors, Hornets, and Celtics all vying for the sixth seed as they try to make the playoffs but avoid the play-in tournament.
In the loss to Boston, the Hornets fell prey to their bad habit of getting out to slow starts to start the game and also stumbled out of halftime.
LaMelo Ball delivered a career-high 38 points along with six rounds, nine assists, and two steals following up his triple-double versus the Clippers but in both cases, the Hornets lost.
Terry Rozier (23), P.J. Washington (16), and Kelly Oubre Jr. (15) were the other double-figure contributors.
Jalen McDaniels (ankle) was downgraded to out while Gordon Hayward (conditioning) was upgraded to questionable for Friday.

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Charlotte Hornets NBA Prediction:
Charlotte has struggled of late losing four of their last six matches while the Cavaliers to a lesser extent have also hit a bit of a rough patch. Both teams covet a playoff berth so this game will serve as a litmus test as the offensive-oriented Hornets face the defensive-minded Cavs.
Ultimately, LaMelo will play Cleveland pay for the absence of Garland.
