Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, the Cleveland Cavaliers and Brooklyn Nets play a one-game match to decide who will claim the seventh seed and play the Boston Celtics in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
The loser will host a one-game elimination match versus the winner of the 9-10 play-in game for the right to play the Heat as the eighth seed.
Brooklyn won the season series 3-1 with victories on November 17th (109-99), 22nd (117-112), and April 8th (118-107) while the Cavaliers won January 17th (114-107).
Last season the clubs played three times with the Cavaliers coming out on top in two of the three contests. The Cavaliers hold the all-time record having bested the Net in 105 of their 188 matches.
The clubs have met three prior times in the postseason with the Cavs winning each time. The three series were in 1992 (3-2), 1993 (3-1), and 2007 (4-2).
Cleveland Cavaliers
This season versus the Nets, the Cavaliers averaged 108.0 points shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 29.9 percent from the perimeter while dishing 22.3 dimes. Evan Mobley missed two of the four contests.
The season could be separated into two segments for the Cavaliers who registered a 35-23 record in this pre All-Star segment of their schedule and spent much of that time as a home court seed.
Performance-wise they were also stronger in the pre All-Star frame ranking fourth overall (105.8) defensively, 19th offensively (110.), and seventh in net ranking (+4.2).
Cleveland fell off in the post-All-Star segment especially defensively plummeting to 24th (116.5) and net rating (-3.1) although the offense didn’t take much of a hit falling one spot to 20th (113.4).
The Cavaliers’ 9-15 record offered the most obvious signs of the team’s regression although losing Jarrett Allen for the final 18 games of the season to a fractured finger played a major factor.
Dean Wade (knee) and Jarrett Allen (finger) are both listed as out but Allen praticed without a splint this weekend and could be a surprise addition to the lineup.
Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.
Brooklyn Nets
This season versus the Cavs, the Nets averaged 112.8 points shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from the perimeter while dishing 29.5 dimes. Kyrie Irving appeared in two of the four contests including the game the Cavaliers won.
For as robust as the Nets’ offense has been they rank 10th (113.2) on the season, while their defense ranked 20th (112.3). After the All-Star break, Brooklyn made moves in each of those categories improving to seventh offensively (117.9) and 18th defensively (115.1).
Kevin Durant led the way for the Nets averaging 29.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 6.4 assists while connecting on 2.1 of his 5.5 perimeter attempts (38.3%). In the three games he played versus the Nets, KD averaged 28.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
In the two games, Irving played against the Nets he averaged 22.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 8.5 assists. He had two very different performances though shooting 12 of 23 in the January 17th match and 7 of 22 in the April 8th contest.
Seth Curry (ankle) and Goran Dragic (quarantine) were both upgraded to probable for Tuesday’s play-in game. Ben Simmons (back/conditioning) remains out indefinitely while Joe Harris (ankle) is done for the season.

- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Brooklyn’s last 6 games.

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Brooklyn Nets NBA Prediction:
The keys for Cleveland will be rising star, Darius Garland who has embraced his new leadership role averaging 21.7 points, 8.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals, and is shooting 38.3 percent on 6.7 perimeter attempts per match.
The Cavs are young so the x-factor could be Kevin Love who has 63 playoff games to his credit – all with Cleveland, including the 2015-16 title run.
As for the Nets, they’ll rely on superstars Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving but if either has a poor shooting night the big question is how they’ll respond defensively. Seth Curry could be the x-factor offensively while Nic Claxton will need to channel his best defensive effort.
Brooklyn will try to jump on the Cavs from the tip while Cleveland will endeavor to limit the Net’s stars and keep the game close with the goal of winning in clutch time.
