The conference semi-finals between the fourth-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers and the top-seeded Boston Celtics tips off on Tuesday. Cleveland was pushed the distance by the Orlando Magic while the Celtics dispensed of the Miami Heat in a Gentleman’s sweep.
Season Series
Last season the teams played four times with the Cavaliers taking three of the four contests while the Celtics reversed their fortunes this season taking two of the three meetings. Boston holds the all-time record between the squads with 139 victories in 226 matches.
The clubs have a long storied playoff history having faced each other on eight prior occasions each winning four of the series. The last meeting occurred in 2018 with the Cavs winning 4-3.
*Editor’s Note: Statistics and rankings are current as of this writing, on Monday, May 6th. Numbers may vary slightly entering games on Tuesday, May 7th.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers have the decided rest disadvantage getting just a day and a half to prepare for this round. They arrive with the availability of Jarrett Allen in question and Donovan Mitchell carrying a huge offensive load while seemingly playing on a knee that is far from 100 percent.
Facing the Magic’s top-tier defense Mitchell excelled in closing out the series scoring 50 and 39 points in the last two games. He’ll need more help and the entire team will need to improve on the road where they’ve yet to win a playoff game this season.
Cavaliers Stats
Through the season, Cleveland ranked 16th offensively (114.7), and seventh defensively (112.1) with a plus +2.5 net differential that ranked 12th overall.
To this point in the playoffs the Cavaliers rank 15th offensively (100.0) and fourth defensively (104.9) with a minus -4.9 net differential ranking 12th.
Cleveland performs below average against the spread with a 41-46-2 record through 89 contests.
Cavaliers Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Jarrett Allen, C (questionable — ribs)
- Craig Porter Jr., PG (OUT indefinitely — ankle)
- Ty Jerome, PG (OUT indefinitely—ankle)
- Dean Wade, PG (OUT indefinitely —knee)
Boston Celtics
Obtaining the top seed in the league is paying dividends as the Celtics have arguably the easiest path to the Conference and NBA Finals.
The lone issue is they enter this series without Kristaps Porzingis but it’s unlikely that will matter against Cleveland, especially with Allen’s presence uncertain.
Unlike their opponent, the Celtics are well-rested and were able to watch the Cavs in action as part of their preparation.
Celtics Stats
Boston ranked first offensively (122.2) and was second defensively (110.6) while registering a net differential of plus +111.7 which also ranked first overall.
Entering this round of the playoffs, the Celtics rank fourth offensively (117.7) and third defensively (100.7) with a plus +17.0 net differential that ranks first.
In terms of the Celtics’ performance against the spread, they offer a 45-37-5 record through 87 matches.
Celtics Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Kristaps Porzingis, PF (OUT indefinitely — calf)

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
With apologies to the Cavaliers, I don’t expect them to put up much of a fight in this series. Mitchell will likely win them a game but they’ll struggle to keep up offensively and unless the Celts have an off-shooting night that’s a big problem.
Take the Celtics to win and even though they might be rusty with all the time off also to cover the massive spread as they send a message to the Cavs right from the tip.
