Friday, October 28th, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Boston Celtics for the first of four meetings this season. Boston will host again on March 1st while the Cavs will host on November 2nd and March 6th.
The Cavaliers last played Wednesday defeating the Magic 103-92 while the Celtics have been off since Monday when they suffered their first loss of the season (102-120) in Chicago.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Celtics winning two of the three contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having won 136 matches of the 219 played versus Cleveland.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Darius Garland participated in the morning shoot Wednesday, and although he remained out versus the Magic it’s likely he’ll return to action this weekend for this match or on Sunday versus the Knicks.
While the Cavs have been winning in spite of his absence it’s important they get him back for his contributions but also so the starting unit can get in some reps and develop chemistry.
In their opening match and preseason games, there were noticeable hiccups in the offense when Garland and Donovan Mitchell were on the court. Those issues will be easily addressed simply by time and repetition.
While Cleveland enters this match with an identical record to the Celtics their schedule hasn’t been uber difficult facing the Wizards, Bulls and Magic and suffering their lone loss to a likely playoff squad (Raptors).
Dylan Windler (ankle) and Darius Garland (eye) are both questionable for Friday. Ricky Rubio (knee) is out until early January.
Boston Celtics
The club’s first loss came against the Bulls in a match where they led by 19 points but ended up losing by 18 points. Jayson Tatum (26 points, eight rebounds, five assists) and Jaylen Brown (21 points, six rebounds, two assists, two blocks) produced to their typical standard.
Malcolm Brogdon (12) and Marcus Smart (11) were the only other double-figure scorers on a night where the offense was stilted, the whistle became a factor, and rebounding (or lack thereof) contributed to the loss.
The officials are partially to blame based on a biased whistle that witnessed the Bulls take a 29-12 free throw advantage. However, it also led to two ejections as Joe Mazzulla took umbrage with a call.

Later Grant Williams was also tossed picking up his second tech after he complained and made contact with an official. Mazzulla shouldn’t have been ejected but the Williams situation definitely warranted his ejection (no one believes that contact was ‘inadvertant’).
Williams will serve the league-mandated suspension on Friday. Robert Williams (knee) is rehabbing from knee surgery that will keep him out until February while Danilo Gallinari (ACL) is lost for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Boston is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- Cleveland is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Boston’s last 7 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Cleveland’s last 6 games.
Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics NBA Prediction:
This contest offers really intriguing matchups made all the more interesting due to the variance of length between the clubs.
Cleveland already has a height advantage in the front court but with Robert Williams out and Grant Williams serving his suspension, it means the Celtics will rely heavily on Al Horford.
Joe Mazzulla will have to go deeper in his bench than usual counting on Noah Vonleh, Blake Griffin, possibly Luke Kornet, and maybe bring up Mfiondu Kabengele from the G-League. Boston ranks 27th in rebounding.
The other side of the equation is the Cavaliers’ backcourt which features three guards all 6’1 (assuming Garland returns). They’ll contend with Marcus Smart who plays bigger than his height (6’3), Malcolm Brogdon (6’5), and Derrick White (6’4).
However, more concerning for the Cavs guards will be stopping Tatum and Brown who’ll no doubt seek them out and run their offense to specifically force them to defend their size.
I’ll take the Celtics rebounding for the win but the Cavaliers and the points in the match because the Cavs’ twin towers will be on the glass to keep this game close.
