Thursday, March 31st, finds the Cleveland Cavaliers facing the Atlanta Hawks for the fourth and final time this season. The Hawks lead the season series 2-1 with victories on December 31st (121-118) and February 15th (124-116) while Cleveland won 101-95 on October 23rd.
Both teams are playing back-to-back sets following games on the front side Wednesday with Cleveland losing 112-120 to the Mavericks while the Hawks defeated the Thunder 136-118.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Cavaliers taking two of the three contests. The Hawks have won 126 of the 235 matches played versus the Cavaliers all-time.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cinderella team that captured our imaginations to start the season has endured their greatest hardships down the stretch. While teams want to be using this time to build momentum to carry through into the postseason the Cavaliers are stumbling.
Granted, injuries are playing a definite role in this equation with Jarrett Allen fracturing his finger and missing the last 12 games. Joining him on the sideline is Evan Mobley who’ll miss at least three or four games after badly spraining his ankle in the Magic game.
The regression of the Cavaliers dates back to February 12th just prior to the All-Star Break. In the 20 games played from that date forward, Cleveland is 7-13.
That points to issues arising even prior to Allen’s injury. History has shown young teams who gain early season success after years of losing have suffered similar fates.
As teams ratchet up their physicality and increase their overall effort and intensity for a young team like the Cavs it’s learning to dig a little deeper to find that next level.
And they could find that next level, especially once Allen and Mobley return but it has to be at least a slight hit to their confidence that they were a top-six team in the East for 23 weeks before falling into the play-in tournament berths.
It would be extremely disheartening for this young squad to have experienced such great success only to end up losing to the Nets and either Charlotte or Atlanta and not get to play a full round in the postseason.
Rajon Rondo (ankle) and Dean Wade (knee) are questionable for Thursday. Evan Mobley (ankle), and Jarrett Allen (finger) are out indefinitely while Collin Sexton (knee) is out for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks are the Jekyll and Hyde squad of the Eastern Conference. While not mathematically confirmed yet they appear poised to be one of the play-in seeds.
Currently, they reside in the 10th seed a half-game back of the Hornets and a game back of the Nets. Atlanta has kicked it up a notch registering a 7-3 record in their last 10 matches.
In that mix were two quality wins versus the Grizzlies and Warriors. The schedule gods helped them out as well with a slew of sub .500 squads but they failed to capture the most essential win versus the Hornets.
Six games remain on their itinerary with two back-to-back sets, an even split of home versus road matches and four tough opponents (Cavaliers, Nets, Raptors, and Heat).
Danilo Gallinari (elbow), Skylar Mays (illness), and Jalen Johnson (concussion) are questionable for Thursday. John Collins (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.

Free Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
Both teams desperately need this victory as the Cavaliers have fallen two games back of the Raptors and Bulls for the sixth and fifth seeds and hold a two-game edge over the Nets.
The Hawks might have run out of room to move up a number of rungs but at a minimum would like to grab home court for the play-in elimination game between the ninth and 10th seeds.
Atlanta is a decidedly better club at home (24-14) versus the road (15-23) so with the Cavaliers shorthanded it bodes well for the Hawks.
