Looking for 2019 Cleveland Cavaliers Predictions? The Cavs are entering Year 2 of their most recent post-LeBron era with far more questions than answers. Chief among them may be whether or not the albatross of a contract attached to Kevin Love is finally traded away.

All eyes will be on the development of the backcourt this season, and while Love provides the team a championship presence, his production value at this point isn’t enough to justify the money spent.
This team might finally realize it’s better off embracing the tank since it has a presumably long rebuild ahead.
Players Who Have Left
- Deng Adel
- Jaron Blossomgame
- Marquese Chriss
- Channing Frye
- David Nwaba
- J.R. Smith
- Nik Stauskas
Players Who Have Arrived
- Darius Garland
- Dylan Windler
- Kevin Porter, Jr.
The Cavaliers aren’t going to miss any individual player from this summer’s departures in a meaningful way. J.R. Smith’s release had started to feel inevitable, and maybe only Channing Frye qualifies as a semi-household name among the rest.
Darius Garland is easily the biggest get for the Cavs this summer. He now makes up a backcourt of the future—or what Cleveland hopes will be one—with Collin Sexton and all eyes will be on him as a rookie to see if he can’t be both the producer and the leader the team desperately needs.
Cleveland Cavaliers Strengths:
You have to start with that promising young backcourt. Call it a reach if you may, but these two represent one of the true bright spots on the roster.
In 2019-20, expect some hesitation early in the year as each Sexton and Garland try and figure out how to negotiate playing alongside a very similar player.

Neither will want to step on the other’s toes based on what we know about their personalities, but at some point a pecking order—or at least knowing who fills which roles—will need to be established.
If Kevin Love is traded at any point in the year, expect these two to get the ultimate green light to fire away at all. At that point, it’ll be more survival of the fittest than “let me watch out for those toes”—but healthy competition internally can only help this group improve since it’ll be seeing a lot of garbage time against opponents.
Cleveland Cavaliers Weaknesses:
There’s another side to the “promising upside” coin.
Total inexperience.
To expect this team to win games is to assume they even know how to at the professional level. Love is a champion, yes. Matthew Delladova and Tristan Thompson, too. But when times are tough—and there are going to be plenty of tough times—this group’s lack of experience will show.
There are plenty of other on-court categories to hit here. Shooting must improve. Defensive rotations couldn’t get much worse from a year ago. Even health—something seemingly uncontrollable—never seems to be on their side.
But in reality, the fact that this team is so young and has such little idea where it’s production will come from is what will be their undoing.

Cleveland Cavaliers Betting Prediction:
Although it wouldn’t have felt right to include a salary cap road map as a strength in a season preview, it also can’t be ignored that Koby Altman has set this team up for a nice transition period. That period actually began while LeBron James was still on the roster during the mid-season overhaul in February 2018. But it’s continued, and it’s why it makes so much sense that Love and his massive money-eater of a contract could be gone this year even if the return is minimal.
With all that in mind, there’s just no place we can project this team other than dead last in its division. The Chicago Bulls will look like challengers for that spot at times this year, but it will ultimately be Cleveland’s to lose, and the same could even be said for the 15th spot in the Eastern Conference.
This team won’t be good this year, but it’s not supposed to be. It can hang its hat on that if it chooses since expectations will be low and the national spotlight will rarely shine their way.
Expect some fun, sloppy, occasionally promising looks from the young players throughout the year. But don’t expect much else until we see what Altman can do with his cap space and what Beilein can do with his young, ever-changing roster.
