On Wednesday, March 16th, the Chicago Bulls and Utah Jazz will meet for the second and final time this season. Chicago won the initial contest 107-99 on October 30th.
Both teams last played on Monday with the Bulls losing 103-112 to the Kings while the Jazz fell 111-117 to the Bucks.
Last season, the teams played twice with Utah winning both contests. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Jazz in 54 of their 106 matches
Chicago Bulls
Despite getting Alex Caruso back the Bulls continue to struggle to win games versus the elite clubs. During the five-game losing streak, they dropped matches versus the Grizzlies, Heat, Hawks, Bucks, and 76ers.
They snapped the losing streak with back-to-back wins versus the tanking Pistons and struggling Cavaliers but then lost to the Kings.
This is the second stop of a three-game road trip. Chicago will return home after this game and a stop in Phoenix for one game (Raptors) prior to hitting the road again for a five-game road trip primarily in the East.
The Bulls backcourt led the scoring effort in Sacramento with Zach LaVine dropping 27 points and DeMar DeRozan scoring 21. Caruso played 27 minutes scoring six points but was a minus -10.
Zach LaVine (knee) is probable to play Wednesday. Lonzo Ball (knee) is out indefinitely while Patrick Williams (thumb) is presumed out for the season.
Utah Jazz
Since the All-Star break, the Jazz are 6-4 with their best wins coming in the first two games back (Mavericks and Suns). However, in the last eight games, the wins have all been against the lower-tier clubs (Rockets, Thunder, Blazers, Kings).
The losses are a mix of two higher seeds (Mavericks and Bucks) and two teams fighting for a play-in seed (Pelicans, Spurs). Rudy Gobert has been in and out of the lineup nursing injuries and that’s impacted the team’s defense which isn’t looking to be as strong as it was in prior seasons.
Since the Jazz opted to add Bojan Bogdanovic, Mike Conley, and Jordan Clarkson their offense has improved but again the defense is less effective with them ranking 11th on the season but has slipped to 16th post All-Star break.
Their ability to ratchet up that end of the court will likely play the biggest factor in where they finish the season and how they do once the playoffs begin. They are clinging to the fourth seed and have an upcoming six-game road trip so they need to iron out those issues now.
Trent Forrest (wrist) is questionable while Bojan Bogdanovic (wrist), Danuel House (knee), and Udoka Azubuike (ankle) were all downgraded to out Wednesday versus the Bulls.

These two clubs represent a similar option in each conference – they both perform well in the regular season but there are huge questions about their potential to extend that effort into the postseason.
For Chicago, there isn’t a long history of underperforming although DeRozan has suffered in that regard. The bigger issue for Chicago is their lack of wins versus the elite teams and while they’ve dealt with injuries to their top defenders the losses to top clubs occurred even prior to the injuries.
The Bulls struggle on the road (16-17) and Vivint Arena is arguably the second hardest venue (Nuggets – Ball Arena) to capture a win at on the road.
