On Friday, January 29th, the San Antonio Spurs plays host to the Chicago Bulls in their first of two meetings this season. The teams will wrap up their regular-season series in Chicago on February 14th.
Both teams enter having played last on Wednesday with Chicago hanging on to beat the Raptors 111-105 while the Spurs lost 110-118 to the Grizzlies.
Last season the clubs played twice with San Antonio taking both contests. The Spurs hold the all-time record with 57 wins in 92 matches versus the Bulls.
Chicago Bulls
The hits just keep on coming for the Bulls who learned Derrick Jones Jr. has fractured his right index finger and like his teammates, Lonzo Ball (knee) and Alex Caruso (wrist) will miss between six to eight weeks.
They came out firing on Wednesday building an early double-digit lead over the Raptors who were playing the second game of a back-to-back set. But like Toronto is wont to do they roared back in the second half making a game of it and forcing the situation to be decided in clutch time.
While the Bulls won that match it highlighted where their issues are going to arise from while Ball and Caruso are out — on defense! The Raptors went after Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic in the second half frequently getting to the charity stripe and if they shot better than 17 of 28 they would’ve won.
As much as the Bulls trio struggles defensively, they feast offensively and the addition of DeMar DeRozan, in particular, is paying dividends as he keeps the young players focused and doesn’t let them get too rattled.
That was tough on Wednesday with the Raptors swarming them down the stretch but he made the right plays to earn the win. For his efforts DeRozan was selected as one of the East All-Star starters.
Jones Jr (finger), Ball (knee), and Caruso (wrist) will all miss between six and eight weeks while Patrick Williams (thumb) is lost for the season.
San Antonio Spurs
Although the Spurs look to be more likely to become a lottery team than a play-in team the young players are developing and Dejounte Murray has played well enough to be considered as an All-Star reserve.
Murray is putting up impressive averages of 19.2 points 8.4 rebounds, 9.1 assists, and 2.0 steals per game while also playing lock-down defense. San Antonio’s position will likely hurt his chances – although Trae Young is a starter and plays on the 12th best team in the East so there’s a chance.
An impressive stat for the Spurs is they have seven players who average 11.0 or more points per game. Part of that is the Spurs’ identity of team first and ball movement and part of it is because there isn’t a typical “superstar” on the club although Murray is flirting with becoming one.
Zach Collins (conditioning) and Keita Bates-Diop (quarantine) are both out indefinitely.

Similarly, the Bulls have stumbled due to the injures with only four wins in their last 11 games. LaVine missed five of those games so having him back helps and teh Bulls have won both games since his return.
DeRozan returns to San Antonio and while he’ll be motivated to win I can also see this being a game where the Bulls struggle to defend because they can’t isolate on one player to stop. Moreover, Jakob Poeltl will play Vucevic with physicality and that could benefit the Spurs.
