Monday, March 18th finds the Phoenix Suns facing the Chicago Bulls as they meet for the second and final time in the 2018-19 regular season. In their last game on Sunday, the Bulls lost to the Sacramento Kings 129-102. The Suns last played Saturday in an overtime thriller they won over the Pelicans 138-136.
This is the second meeting between the teams this season with the Bulls winning the first contest 124-116 while last season Phoenix swept the two-game series. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Bulls in 70 of their 138 matches.
In the first meeting between these squads, Zach LaVine led his team to victory scoring 29 points. He’ll need to channel that effort again especially after how the starters played on Sunday.
Five players scored in double digits but of the starters, only LaVine and Lauri Markkanen managed to be effective. Sophomore Markkanen is on a roll scoring in double digits for 29 straight games.
Entering the day Chicago is on a five-game losing streak and are 3-7 in their last 10 games.
Chandler Hutchison isn’t expected back til month end dealing with an acute injury to a sesamoid bone his right foot. Wendell Carter Jr. is also out rehabbing from the surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb and will miss up to three months. Denzel Valentine had reconstructive surgery on his left ankle and isn’t expected to return this season.
The lottery bound Suns are finishing their season with a strong effort having won six of their last six games. Included in these are wins over the top teams in each conference (Bucks, Warriors).
The recent win over the Pelicans occurred thanks to a coaching error by Alvin Gentry who thought he had a timeout remaining but had used them all up. As a result, the Suns won via free throws given the technical assessed.
Kelly Oubre Jr. notched a career best 32 points in the win and has seemingly been a difference maker on his new team. Devin Booker was on fire scoring 40 points, assisting on 13 and adding 5 rebounds in the winning effort.
Richaun Holmes (right quadriceps sprain) missed the last game while Tyler Johnson (sore right knee) has missed the last two games. Both are uncertain for Monday’s match versus the Bulls.
