Monday, March 7th, the Chicago Bulls and Philadelphia 76ers play for the fourth and final occasion of this season. Philly is looking for the series sweep having won on November 3rd (103-98), November 6th (114-105), and January 6th (119-108).
The Bulls last played Friday in a 112-118 loss to the Bucks while the 76ers played Saturday losing 82-99 to the Heat.
Last season, the teams played three times with the 76ers sweeping the regular-season series and haven’t lost to the Bulls since March 6th of 2019 on a current 10-game winning streak. The 76ers hold the all-time record having bested the Bulls in 130 of their 236 matches.
Chicago Bulls
Nothing like a weekend off to refresh the legs and the mind. That’s what the Bulls got with Saturday and Sunday off to reboot and prepare for this match against the team directly ahead of them in the standings now by a half-game.
With 18 games remaining on their schedule and Alex Caruso and Lonzo Ball still sidelined the Bulls are feeling the effects of trying to carry the extra load on defense without them.
Of the 18 games, 12 are against teams seeded eighth or higher and eight of those matches feature East teams seeded seventh or better. Chicago gets a bit of fortune in that they’ll get to face teams who are struggling or like themselves missing core talents.
They’ll need to be razor-focused though because if they aren’t and concede to all the top teams they could continue to slide down the ladder and end up without home court in the first round.
Nikola Vucevic (hamstring) is questionable for Monday. Lonzo Ball (knee), and Alex Caruso (wrist) are out between six and eight weeks each. Patrick Williams (thumb) is out for the season.
Philadelphia 76ers
So the 76ers finally lost a game since James Harden was traded to Philly – but since he wasn’t on the court does that count?
They cemented the strategy for opponents to keep them under 100 points (swarm Embiid) since they are 1-14 when that happens – but it’s easier said than done (unless you’re the Heat or Celtics).
Joel Embiid delivered a double-double of 22 points and 15 rebounds but did it on an inefficient 4 of 15. Without Harden, the duo of Tyrese Maxey and Tobias Harris offered the secondary scoring with 17 and 16 points respectively.
Although the Sixers came back to beat Cleveland they trailed in both that match and against the Heat by 20 or more points. They allowed the Cavs to score 43 (to their 30) points in the first quarter and against the Heat scored a mere 14 points.
While this team is better with Harden there are definite areas to tweak with starts being one and defensive intensity the second. Plus the Cavs game highlighted how opponents will attack Harden in the postseason to get him in foul trouble.
The 76ers sat Harden on Saturday as part of the hamstring injury maintenance but he’s expected back in the lineup on Monday
