Thursday, March 24th, finds the Chicago Bulls and New Orleans Pelicans playing for the final time this season. Chicago won 128-112 in the initial October 22nd match.
Both teams are coming off back-to-back sets with the Bulls beating the Raptors 113-99 and losing to the Bucks 98-126 on Monday/Tuesday while the Pelicans beat the Hawks 117-112 but fell 103-106 to the Hornets on Sunday/Monday.
Last season, the squads played twice with the Bulls winning both contests. The Bulls hold the advantage all-time winning 25 of the 43 matches versus the Pelicans.
Chicago Bulls
During the long haul of missing Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and Patrick Williams the Bulls backcourt of Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan did the heavy lifting.
DeRozan was so good he became a top-five candidate to win MVP.
But just as the Bulls are getting back Caruso and Williams now that backcourt is dealing with their own injuries. LaVine’s knee has been an issue for a while but DeRozan now has a groin injury that could require him to miss some time.
DeRozan has been a bit of an iron man in his 13 seasons in the pros missing more than 20 games only once but notably, the time he did it was a groin injury and that’s the issue he’s dealing with now.
Monday the Bulls looked sharp defensively but by the same token, the Raptors looked absolutely exhausted as their schedule and shortened bench caught up to them.
On Tuesday, the same crew who played great Monday were easily beat by the Bucks.
LaVine (knee) is probable, while DeRozan (groin) is questionable for Thursday in New Orleans. Lonzo Ball (knee) remains out indefinitely.
New Orleans Pelicans
The Pelicans keep hanging around in the play-in and while everyone focuses on what’s wrong with the Lakers I keep wondering if they are the worst possible matchup for LA.
Those teams have only played once but the Pels dominated them 123-95, granted Anthony Davis was out and Brandon Ingram was healthy. Still, in a one-game elimination, I’d be tempted to take the Pels.
Larry Nance Jr. (knee) was upgraded to probable for Thursday. Brandon Ingram (hamstring) and Zion Williamson (foot) are out indefinitely. Kira Lewis Jr. (ACL) is lost for the season.
