Sunday, March April 10th, the Chicago Bulls and Minnesota Timberwolves play for the second and final time this season. The Bulls won the initial meeting 134-122 on February 11th.
Chicago played on Friday getting routed 117-133 by the Hornets cementing them in the sixth seed while the Wolves last played Thursday winning an important seeding game 127-121 versus the Spurs.
Last season, the teams played twice splitting the season series with each winning at home. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Wolves in 35 of their 62 matches.
Chicago Bulls
It can’t be very heartening to be entering the final game of the season knowing three of the top teams are trying to land in the third seed in order to face your team.
Yet, that’s precisely what the Bucks, Celtics, and 76ers are doing in order to avoid the superstar Nets and red-hot Raptors.
On Friday, the Bulls got the double whammy when the Raptors won to secure the fifth seed and even if they hadn’t erased a 24-point lead still would’ve secured that berth when the Bulls got annihilated by the Hornets.
Although they started the season on fire and had Bulls fans super excited about their potential, injuries to Patrick Williams, Lonzo Ball, and Alex Caruso derailed their defense.
Moreover, they simply couldn’t get the job done against the top seeds ending up 1-14 versus the top four Eastern Conference seeds.
Even with Williams and Caruso back the Bulls realized how much Lonzo Ball matters to their defense as they struggle to stop teams, particularly in the clutch.
DeMar DeRozan has been spectacular and will likely end up on an All-NBA team but will need his teammates to be much better on the defensive end if they have a prayer of getting past the first round.
The Bulls really fell off after the All-Star Break winning just seven times out of 22 occasions with many of those victories versus teams suffering the rest disadvantage, or lottery-bound.
With the Bulls cemented into the sixth seed, Billy Donovan is resting most of the core including DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Nikola Vucevic, and Alex Caruso.
In addition, Coby White (toe) is doubtful while Matt Thomas (leg) was downgraded to out Sunday. Lonzo Ball (knee) is done for the season.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Wolves enter this game also with nothing at stake having cemented the seventh seed in the play-in and will host that match facing the suddenly healthy LA Clippers who got Paul George and Norman Powell back recently.
Still, this club has made big strides this season, and my dark horse Western Conference squad came through in the end. Now, we’ll need to wait to see if they can beat LA in that first play-in game and if not take down either the Pelicans or Spurs in the second match.
Either way, they’ll be in tough facing the Grizzlies if they beat the Clippers or the Suns if they win the second game.
Patrick Beverley (ankle) and D’Angelo Russell (illness) are questionable while Karl-Anthony Towns (rest) is out on Sunday versus the Bulls.

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Minnesota Timberwolves NBA Prediction:
The focus in this game should be for the Bulls and Wolves to keep a rhythm and ensure everyone exits the court healthy as both clubs will turn their attention to the postseason or play-in games respectively.
Although the Wolves are playing better defense, with so many of the core out particularly for the Bulls this is more likely to be a track meet offensive showcase.
