Monday, February 28th, finds the Chicago Bulls facing the Miami Heat for the third of four meetings this season. Miami won both prior meetings on November 27th (107-104) and December 11th (118-92) and will play once more with Chicago hosting on April 2nd.
Chicago last played Saturday losing 110-116 to the Grizzlies while the Heat finished a back-to-back set that featured victories versus the Knicks (110-96) on Friday and Spurs on Saturday (133-129).
By virtue of these results, the Heat gained a one-game edge over the Bulls as they sit one/two at the top of the Eastern Conference.
Chicago Bulls
Although the streak of 35 point games on 50 percent shooting ended at eight in a row, DeMar DeRozan continues his march toward the record books having scored 30 or more points in 10 straight games and can tie Michael Jordan’s record if he scores 30 on Monday.
Given his unselfish nature, he’d give it all up for his team to have won every game and to get his teammates healthy on the court.
Perhaps I’m more exposed to him since he played in Toronto so long but I’d like to believe I would’ve still heard about his penchant for improving at least one main aspect of his game every offseason.
There was the summer he was teaching one of his young daughters how to write and because he was using only his left hand to improve the strength in it and dexterity he wrote using that hand. There were funny videos showing his scribblings but it showed how committed he was.
The summer he was part of the US Team that went to the Rio Olympics he infamously rose at 4 AM every morning to join the team he brought with him for workouts and a few hours later would join the US practice.
If you want to see the rise of a player and how effort and determination can be as important as talent go pull up film from DeRozan’s rookie season when he didn’t have a shot, or a handle, or that infamous Fred Astaire footwork he developed.
Every front office should compile a mixed film showing DeRozan’s progression and use it as a tool to incentivize their youngsters into offseason workouts and commitment to their craft.
That he’s finally getting the recognition he is long overdue has been one of the feel-good stories of the season.
Lonzo Ball (knee), and Alex Caruso (wrist) remain out. Patrick Williams (thumb) is out for the season.
Miami Heat
Another week and I can already guarantee there will be a myriad of daily sports podcasts, TV and radio shows, plus national articles focused on the top of the East.
More precisely, they will ask the question of which of the Nets or 76ers are likeliest to win the East with the swap of James Harden for Ben Simmons.
Some will jump in and warn the defending champion Bucks should still be the prohibitive favorites and occasionally someone will bring up the Bulls and how they’ll be getting back Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso, and possibly Patrick Williams so can’t be overlooked.
Heck, I’ve even caught a few talking about the Celtics’ recent run and their chances.
What you seldom will hear is anyone talking about how the Heat (all due respect to Chicago – a close second) have prevailed despite constant absences to their core due to injury or personal reasons and yet check the top of the East ladder and guess who is sitting there?
Not to mention this team was built for the postseason, not regular-season dominance – – so yeah nice to have but they aren’t sweating where they land.
Kyle Lowry (personal) is out Monday. Markieff Morris (neck) and Victor Oladipo (knee) are out indefinitely.

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Touching on the above point, these teams have dealt with adversity the best this season. Chicago is proving it now while Miami has done it all year.
To wit, prior to the game Friday, Miami’s top 5 of Butler, Adebayo, Lowry, Tucker, and Herro had played less than 65 mins together as a unit all season. Yet, the Heat more than any of the top 6 in the East has been the most disrespected.
The East is strong and matchups are everything, but I really like the Heat to come out of the conference and similarly like them to win/cover the spread in this pivotal game.
