The 2022-23 NBA season tips off for the Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat on Wednesday, October 19th. Both teams covet a championship although only one club has the depth required to realistically achieve that goal.
The Heat finished 2021-22 with the best record in the East while the Bulls who began strong free fell down the ladder finishing with the sixth seed and losing in the first round.
Chicago registered a 3-1 preseason record with victories against the Nuggets, Raptors, and Bucks and a lone loss versus the Pelicans. Miami also had a strong preseason (4-1) defeating the Nets, Grizzlies, Rockets, and Pelicans while suffering their lone loss to the Timberwolves.
Last season the clubs played four times with the Heat sweeping all four contests. The Heat holds the all-time record with 62 wins in 122 matches versus the Bulls.
Chicago Bulls
The Bulls, 2021-22 campaign was a tale of two halves. For much of the early season and particularly between November 29th and February 24th they led the East.
However, once Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso fell to injury they plummeted down the ladder. Clearly, they missed the defensive impact of this duo but the entire season the Bulls failed miserably versus the top-ranked teams.
As I noted in the Central Division preview the Bulls registered the fourth-best league record pre-All-Star break (38-21) but finished 8-15 down the stretch. They struggled to beat the top teams registering a 1-14 record against the top-four EC seeds.
Offseason moves didn’t do much to address the defensive weaknesses such as the additions of Goran Dragic and Tony Bradley. More concerning is Lonzo Ball had yet another knee surgery and is out for an undetermined time.
In the interim head coach, Billy Donovan will have to get creative with his defensive schemes to compensate.
