Saturday, March 24 finds the Chicago Bulls arriving at Little Caesars Arena to face their host the Detroit Pistons. The Bulls are on a three game losing streak with the last being to the Denver Nuggets who blew them out 135-102.
Conversely, the Pistons have been on a little roll of late beating Phoenix and Sacramento and pushed the top ranked team in the NBA into overtime prior to succumbing to Houston 100-96.
These two squads have made a habit of utilizing ‘your turn, my turn’ of late with the squads splitting last season’s series and each with a game in hand this season. Even their all -time record is close with the Bulls having just two additional wins in hand 129 to the Pistons 127.
While teams jockey for position in the playoffs or to step on the ladder, the Bulls are embroiled in their own race – the tank race. Chicago is trying to lose games in a manner which isn’t an obvious chuck of games.
But as the season draws to end efforts like the loss to Denver scream of their true intentions.
The clear effort to tank has been obvious in the past few outings for the Bulls including not playing key players even with minor injuries.
Lauri Markkanen (back spasms), Paul Zipser (foot), Kris Dunn (toe), Zach LaVine (knee tendinitis) and Antonio Blakeney (wrist) are all expected out Saturday.
The Pistons sure looked good against the Rockets. Whether that was a factor of Houston not being inspired to win, Blake Griffin still carrying a bit of a grudge against Chris Paul or just a matchup situation.
The other big factor could be Reggie Jackson being back. While the Pistons haven’t technically been eliminated, they can use these last few games to as an opportunity to observe how the big three of Griffin, Jackson and Andre Drummond fit.
Versus the Rockets Griffin posted a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Drummond also registered the double-double of 17 points and 20 rebounds. In limited minutes 19:55, Jackson scored 4 points and added 3 rebounds.
Jon Leuer is lost for the season after having surgery on his ankle.
