Thursday, March 3rd, finds the Chicago Bulls facing the Atlanta Hawks for the fourth and final time this season. Chicago is in a position to sweep the season series having won on December 27th (130-118), December 29th (131-117), and March 3rd (112-108).
Chicago last played on Monday losing 112-99 to the Heat while the Hawks played on Tuesday losing (98-107) to the Celtics.
Last season, the teams played three times with the Hawks sweeping the regular-season series. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 135 of their 251 matches.
Chicago Bulls
Without Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso, the Bulls have battled to stay atop the East with DeMar DeRozan serving up history-turning performances.
DeRozan was on a tear scoring 30 plus points in ten consecutive games (35 plus in eight consecutive games) but the Heat ended that streak holding him to 18 points.
Although they’ve rode the shoulders of their vet with the loss to the Heat they fell back of Miami by two games. The Bucks did them a favor beating the Heat on Wednesday to narrow that gap to 1.5.
Chicago isn’t getting any favors from the schedule makers with six of their next 10 games against top-five seeds plus another versus the Raptors. They’ll get three games against the lower seeds in this schedule segment including this match, plus the Pistons, and Kings
Lonzo Ball (knee), and Alex Caruso (wrist) remain out. Patrick Williams (thumb) is out for the season.
Atlanta Hawks
For a team who thought they could flip a switch and get right back in the mix of things in the East, the Atlanta Hawks haven’t lived up to those predictions. Through the last seven games, they are 3-4 and with some major issues on the defensive side of the court.
It’s been presumed the issue was completely based on effort but I’m starting to wonder if it might have more to do with the roster fit and chemistry. One thing is certain, the Hawks are a much better club with John Collins on the floor and his absence is palpable.
The loss to the Celtics also demonstrated another weakness which is inconsistent scoring. Their best frames are the second and third where they rank first in the association. They struggle to get out to fast starts and are more concerning in closing out games.
Evidence of this was offered in their recent loss to the Celtics as they built up a 14 point lead but got outscored and out hustled in the second half losing both the third and fourth quarters.
Despite tweaking his ankle Trae Young led the way scoring 31 points and dishing six dimes. Bogdan Bogdanovic scored 25 points off the bench and Danilo Gallinari chipped in 12 points as the only other double-figure contributors.
Lou Williams (hip) was upgraded to probable, Trae Young (ankle) is questionable while Onyeka Okongwu (concussion) was ruled out for Thursday versus the Bulls. John Collins (foot) remains out with no definitive return date.

Free Chicago Bulls vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
Young played through the ankle injury on Tuesday but he stiffened up in the second half so if he can’t go it gives the Bulls a decided edge. More important is the absence of Collins and Okongwu who are the Hawks’ best big man defenders.
The key will be how well Clint Capela can limit Nikola Vucevic and finding a way to contain the Bulls frontcourt of DeRozan and Zach LaVine. I’m not confident Atlanta can meet that challenge and therefore I’m picking the Bulls to win and cover.
