Chicago has lost 16 of its last 21 games. The five wins have come against Atlanta, Minnesota, Orlando, Dallas and Memphis.
There has been a report that the NBA warned the Bulls sometime last week about tanking and resting its healthy players but if there’s a way around the system, it’s the system that must be fixed, not its elements.
If you want teams to try and win, you can’t offer incentive for a team to lose and that’s still what the lottery system is doing, even if it is a little better than simply handing the top pick to the worst team.
With the problems at the college level coinciding with the tanking, it has me thinking the two could be related.
No quick fix will be perfect, but my broad idea is that the NBA abolishes the draft and allows teams to sign any player they want at any time. What other union of businesses blocks the individuals that make it up from hiring a prospective employee, given he wants to work for the business and the business wants him to work for it?
The problem with the college game is that there are players who don’t want to be there. They are capable of going pro and want to go pro, but they can’t. So if a guy wants to sign with an NBA team at 17 and start getting paid to be a professional basketball player, let him.
And if a player thinks he ought to play college ball first and continue his education while trying to work toward becoming a pro, or simply toward a degree, it will be because he wants to be there.
But what we have now is a broken system, only warped this way because of quick-fix rules designed to address a specific problem without looking at how they will affect the system at large.
The NBA banned high school players from entering the draft because the league wasn’t ready to cater to such young talent. Instead of banning this players, what the NBA ought to had done is find a way to improve the player experience for those guys.
If players could go pro whenever they wanted to, it would solve the issue of the college bribery and also allow the league to abolish the draft and simply give teams a salary cap (that already exists) to pay its players.
Clubs would have to decide how much money to invest in players who will help the team win now, versus players who will help the team win in the future. There is fear that one team would sign all the good players but it’s a competitive business and you just wouldn’t have all the best players and prospects will to take pay cuts simply to play for one team. There is enough talent and enough money to go around to make the hypothetical league competitive.
