Wednesday, November 4th, finds the Charlotte Hornets facing the Memphis Grizzlies in the first of two scheduled meetings this season. The Hornets will host the next meeting on January 4th.
Both teams last played Wednesday with the Hornets losing 88-106 to the Bulls while the Grizzlies beat Portland 111-106.
Last season, the teams played twice with the teams splitting the contests each winning on the road. The Hornets hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 25 of their 47 matches
Charlotte Hornets
It’s been a roller coaster up and down season for the Hornets who still haven’t had LaMelo Ball on the court as he deals with a sprained ankle.
On top of that, they’re still without Miles Bridges who pleaded no contest to domestic violence charges and will be on probation which now means the Hornets have to decide what direction to take with the player who was their second-best performer last season.
That makes it hard to know precisely where Charlotte is currently. Are they in the mix as lower seeded playoff team or should they be focused on moving on from Bridges and trading some vets to enter the Wembanyama sweepstakes?
The Hornets are scoring 113.4 points per contest which rank 17th league-wide. From an efficiency standpoint, they shoot 46.1 percent from the field and 36.8 percent from the perimeter ranking 18th and 12th respectively.
Defensively, Charlotte is giving up an average of 114.5 points per game which ranks 19th. Charlotte began the season struggling defensively but has stepped up its efforts on that side of the court and is witnessing the benefit of those actions.
Opponents are shooting 45.3 percent from the field (9th) and a mere 31.8 percent from the perimeter which is the second-best ranking league-wide.
Gordon Hayward left the last game with a shoulder injury and was downgraded along with Terry Rozier (ankle) and Cody Martin (quad) as out on Friday. LaMelo Ball (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Memphis Grizzlies
On the opposite end of the spectrum to the Hornets are the Grizzlies who know precisely who they are – have doubled down on their grit and grind identity with a new era twist of excitement due to Ja Morant’s brilliance.
They await the return of Jaren Jackson Jr. but still seem very much in the mix to win a home-court seed, albeit that defense needs some tweaks.
Offensively, the Grizzlies are among the top squads in the league scoring 117.3 points per game which ranks fifth. They’re shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from the perimeter which ranks 13th and fifth respectively.
The Grizzlies allow opponents to score 119.5 per game which ranks 26th while their foes shoot 47.2 percent from the field (22nd) and 37.7 percent from the perimeter (24th).
Ziaire Williams (knee – mid-Dec) Jackson Jr. (foot – late Dec) and Danny Green (ACL -mid-Feb) are out indefinitely.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
There have been several trap games similar this season, and the 11.5 spread is super rich combined with the Grizzlies’ defensive struggles. Of their five victories, three were by single digits while they beat the Nets by 10 and Kings by 15.
Charlotte (even without Rozier, Ball, and Hayward) has demonstrated an ability to balance their scoring so I look for them to keep this closer than the spread.
