Friday, April 8th, the Charlotte Hornets and Chicago Bulls meet for the third and final time this season. Chicago has already won the season series with victories in the two prior matches on November 29th (133-119) and February 9th (121-109).
The Hornets are completing a back-to-back set having beaten the Magic 128-101 on the front side Thursday while the Bulls lost 94-117 to the Celtics to extend their losing streak to three in a row.
Last season, the teams played three times with Chicago sweeping the season series. The Bulls hold the all-time record having bested the Hornets in 75 of their 119 matches.
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets enter this game in the 10th seed a game back of both the Hawks and Nets and two games back of Cleveland.
They own the tiebreak versus the Nets and while they split the season series with Atlanta could still gain that tiebreak if they win out and then will need to rely on the conference records to break the tie.

The Cavaliers own the tiebreak versus the Hornets. Charlotte was on a hot streak winning seven of eight matches including important victories versus the Jazz and Nets but then stumbled losing three of their next five games, albeit losing to elite teams (Nuggets, 76ers, Heat).
The latter two defeats were of the embarrassing variety as they coughed up 144 points in each. They got back on track with the win versus Orlando but will need to focus on these final two matches against the Bulls and Wizards to try to improve their play-in tournament seeding.
Gordon Hayward (foot) is questionable to play Friday versus the Bulls.
Chicago Bulls
The big news out of Chicago other than securing a return to the playoffs is Lonzo Ball will not return this season. His knee hasn’t responded well during efforts to ramp him up for a return so he’ll spend the offseason getting the knee right.
His absence becomes an even bigger factor because Alex Caruso hasn’t immediately improved the defense since returning mostly due to him having back issues.
The Bulls are sort of backing into the playoffs not playing anywhere near as solidly as they did at the season start.
The fact they can’t beat elite teams makes them susceptible to a quick playoff exit. Of the 10 teams who are seeded in the top 10 positions in the East, the Bulls have the worst record versus the top four East seeds (1-14).
That’s much of the reason, the trio vying for the second, third, and fourth seeds (Bucks, Celtics, 76ers) are hoping they get the Bulls in the first round to avoid the Nets and the Raptors.
Brooklyn because of their superstars and Toronto because they possess the best record (12-3) in the last 15 games and are peaking at just the right time.
To that end, the Raptors’ magic number to clinch the fifth seed is one so a Bulls loss or Raptors win means the Bulls will also be cemented in sixth.
Zach LaVine (knee) is probable, Alex Caruso (back) is questionable, and Matt Thomas (leg) was downgraded to out Friday. Lonzo Ball (knee) is done for the season.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Charlotte is 9-4 SU in their last 13 games.
- Chicago is 5-15 ATS in their last 20 games
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of Charlotte’s last 6 games on the road.
- The total has gone UNDER in 12 of Chicago’s last 17 games
- The Hornets are 9-4-1 ATS in their last 14 games as a road underdog.
- The Bulls are 35-15-1 ATS in their last 51 games as a favorite.
Charlotte Hornets vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Analysis:
If trends for the season hold true the Hornets are up against it having only won one game out of 14 in the second game of back-to-back sets and that was against the Pacers.
The Bulls will need to resist getting into an up and down run and gun offensive battle because that will benefit Charlotte who typically plays defense for about five minutes a match.
