Wednesday, April 13th, the tenth seeded Charlotte Hornets and ninth-seeded Atlanta Hawks participate in a one-game elimination play-in match.
The winner will advance to face the Cleveland Cavaliers to determine the final playoff team in the Eastern Conference who’ll advance to face the top-seeded Miami Heat in the 1-8 first-round matchup.
Both teams finished the regular season with an identical 43-39 record and split their regular-season series 2-2 but the Hawks won the tiebreak based on their divisional record.
Atlanta won the November 20th (115-105) and January 23rd (113-91) matches while the Hornets took the December 5th (130-127) and March 16th (116-106) contests.
These teams have played once prior in the postseason in 1998 with the Hornets winning the series 3-1.
Charlotte Hornets
While the Hornets struggled early they closed strong as one of six teams to register an 11-4 record in their final 15 games. Among those victories was the final game against the Hawks.
While Charlotte isn’t known as a defensive squad they held Trae Young to a season-low nine points on 3 of 12 from the field and scoreless from the perimeter (0-6).
Young still dished out 15 assists but also turned the ball over six times. In addition to Young, the Hornets will need to be sharp on the perimeter as the Hawks possess the second best 3-point efficiency (37.4%) scoring 12.9 deep balls on 34.4 attempts per game.
Charlotte ranks sixth (36.5%) but attempts almost four more 3-pointers (38.2) per game equating to one extra triple scored per game (13.9).
Gordon Hayward (foot) is out indefinitely and his absence will be felt in so much as he’s one of the few players on the Hornets with postseason experience.
Atlanta Hawks
A season after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals the Hawks returned in 2021 feeling their oats and began the season acting like they’d arrived and expected to win.
Instead, they quickly discovered the elite teams who sustain excellence over a period of years know they need to continually improve and grow.
Atlanta began the season 4-9 prior to going on a seven game winning streak then once again regressed in a 6-16 stretch. By the time they reached the All-Star break the Hawks record was 28-30 and they were well down the ladder.
Knowing they needed to flip the switch a more serious squad returned after the break registering the sixth-best post break record of 15-9.
Trae Young lives for these moments and will be amped up for a single-game elimination but likely won’t have his cohort John Collins and while he’s listed as out on the injury report that’s not a given as per head coach Nate McMillan.
Nate McMillan said John Collins has played 4-on-4. He said “we’ll see” when it comes to him possibly playing tomorrow.

Lou Williams (back) is downgraded to out while John Collins (finger/foot) remains listed as out indefinitely. Most believe he’ll miss the match versus the Hornets but could return Friday to face the Cavaliers.

Free Charlotte Hornets vs. Atlanta Hawks NBA Prediction:
In the four-game regular-season series between the squads, the Hawks averaged 115.3 points shooting 48.0 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from the perimeter.
In contrast, the Hornets averaged 110.5 points shooting 45.9 percent from the field and 28.4 percent from the perimeter.
If this game was occurring in Charlotte I might lean the other way, but the Hawks are a different team on their home court (27-14) where they play with greater confidence than on the road (16-25) plus their deep run last season gives them substantially more experience.
