Tuesday, March 1st the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors meet for the fourth and final time this season. The teams played on Monday in this home and home/back-to-back set.
Brooklyn won on November 7th (116-103) and December 14th (131-129 the latter requiring overtime to decide while the Raptors won in a 133-97 romp on Monday.
Brooklyn Nets
Not having your core talents available is challenging but the trade of James Harden shored up the Nets’ depth and with Seth Curry and Andre Drummond in the mix Brooklyn had registered a 3-2 record even taking down a fully healthy Bucks lineup.
Toronto was also short top contributors (Fred VanVleet, OG Anunoby) but were the team playing with desperation resulting in a 42 point first quarter and a 15 point lead that was never in question.
Four Nets scored in double-figures with LaMarcus Aldridge the high point-getter registering 15 points. Cam Thomas and Bruce Brown each scored 14 while Seth Curry chipped in 11.
Goran Dragic played against the team he began the season with but struggled against the swarming defense shooting 1 of 5 for six points while adding five assists.
Kyrie Irving has played in road games but like New York, he is ineligible to play in Canada due to vaccination protocols. Ben Simmons (conditioning), Kevin Durant (knee), and Joe Harris (ankle) are all out indefinitely.
Toronto Raptors
The last time the Raptors lost consecutive games by 20 or more points it was 2012 so after the Hawks’ loss on Saturday the team was riled about their poor performances versus the Hornets and Hawks.
Head coach Nick Nurse and Fred VanVleet told reporters their performances were unacceptable and they would make sure to play to their identity on Monday.
From the tip, the Raptors were on the ball creating the first of 22 turnovers with Scottie Barnes stealing the ball which was a sign of things to come. The rookie seemed to be everywhere on the court matching his career-best 28 points on 12 of 14 (hitting his first 11 shots).
He also collected a career-best 16 rebounds including nine on the offensive glass plus four assists, five steals, and a block. In fact, it was the young Raptors who carried this victory with Pascal Siakam and Gary Trent Jr. combining for 5 of 24.
Precious Achiuwa’s newfound confidence was on display as he offered 20 points and eight rebounds while Malachi Flynn filling in for VanVleet registered 18 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Toronto’s reserve unit who rank dead last for scoring (24.4) had arguably their best performance of the season scoring 67 points Thad Young who the Raptors traded Dragic to the Spurs for chipped in 11 points hitting all three of his 3-point attempts.
OG Anunoby (finger) and Fred VanVleet are questionable.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Raptors are 6-4 in the last 10 head to head matches
- The Raptors are 6-4 ATS in their last 10 meetings.
- Over Under is 5-5 in the teams last 10 head to head matchups
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Toronto Raptors NBA Prediction:
These teams are currently seeded seventh and eighth in the East so both will have extra motivation to win but the Raptors have a few added advantages.
In the second game of back-to-backs, the Nets are 2-7 while the Raptors are 8-4. It’s not likely Siakam and Trent Jr. will have consecutive poor shooting nights.
But the biggest factor is bound to be the real sixth man — the fans. For the past two months, the Raptors have played in what felt like a mausoleum as Ontario drastically restricted event attendance resulting in an empty Scotiabank Arena.
Toronto was the only NBA team to deal with that disadvantage playing 19 home games (14-5) to an empty stadium but even opposing teams commented on how weird it felt playing in those games.
Monday marks the return to full capacity a fact everyone on the team was talking about as they are anxious to once again feel that boost of energy from their fans.
I like Toronto to make it two in a row but expect a better effort from the Nets and a closer final score than the 8.5 spread.
