Brooklyn Nets
The Nets ran up 135 points in their 10-point win over the Pelicans on Monday. Four starters scored at least 18 point and Kyrie Irving led the way with 39 points and nine assists.

Since then, the Nets have been off. They’ll enter this game refreshed and ready to battle for five in a row on the road, the first four of which will come exclusively on the West Coast before finishing up in Chicago.
Irving is scoring nearly 32 points per game so far as a Net on pretty darn good shooting splits. He’s up there among his team’s best rebounders, too, which is a surprise. The same old reports about Kyrie’s mood swings are surfacing, though.
There are those who believe it isn’t as much about Irving’s numbers but some of the numbers of the guys living on the margins with him commanding most of the attention.
One guy who comes to mind after the first few weeks of the season is Latvian Rodions Kurucs, who had an excellent rookie season last year after going 40th overall in the draft.
Kurucs averaged 8.5 points per game in about 20 minutes last season and had some huge games mixed in. This year, he’s only playing about a dozen minutes per game and has been ineffective within the fabric of the new-look Nets.
Irving may put up numbers but if the effectiveness of his role players suffer, he isn’t nearly as valuable as those numbers might indicate.
Portland Trail Blazers
Portland looked to be a good division last season, when the Timberwolves were still bad and the Thunder still had Russell Westbrook.

The Northwest is looking even more loaded this season with Minnesota 4-3 right in the middle of the pack.
Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum are getting it done the usual way. Lillard is scoring what would represent a career-best 31 points per game and his backcourt mate is chipping in another 20; together, they are representing 11 assists.
Hassan Whiteside didn’t play in Portland’s game against Philly but he’s back with his 14 and 12 points and rebounds per game.
This will be Portland’s second back-to-back on the season. Portland plays in Los Angeles against the Clippers on Thursday.
