Tuesday, March 15th the Brooklyn Nets playing the Orlando Magic for the fourth and final meeting of the season. Brooklyn leads the series 2-1 with wins November 10th (123-90) and 19th (115-113) while the Magic won the most recent match on December 18th (100-93).
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Nets hanging on to defeat the Knicks 110-107 while the Magic pushed the 76ers to overtime losing 114-116.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Nets winning two of three contests. The Magic holds the all-time record having bested the Nets in 68 of their 123 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
Updates to start the week are that Ben Simmons isn’t even running yet which would imply he’s far from being ready to don the Nets jersey. That’s disconcerting considering Brooklyn has only 14 games left to get him acclimated.
Moreover, if the COVID protocols remain the same in New York that means Kyrie Irving will only be available to participate in this game plus at Memphis, Miami, and Atlanta since the final road game is at MSG versus the Knicks.
Based on the comments made by the Nets it sure sounded like Simmons is at least two weeks (or more) away from a return which means he’ll miss three of those road matches to work with Irving and figure out their chemistry.
Go one step further and if the Raptors stay in seventh (they are 1.0 game back of sixth to start this week) then Irving couldn’t participate in either play-in game because Canada also has even stricter COVID protocols (he couldn’t enter Scotiabank Arena for example).
Sure the Nets have the best player in the game in Kevin Durant but relying on him to win two games or have Simmons up to speed for those matches is a big roll of the dice.
Then again, if KD is going to emulate what he did versus the Knicks scoring 53 points it might all be a moot point.
Kyrie Irving is probable for Monday. Seth Curry (ankle and David Duke Jr. (ankle) are questionable for Tuesday. LaMarcus Aldridge (hip) and Ben Simmons (conditioning) are out indefinitely. Joe Harris (ankle) had another surgery ending his season.
Orlando Magic
Holding down the worst record in the East (and until this weekend the NBA), Orlando has stacked up enough losses they can afford to play the spoiler role now to build momentum to carry forward into next season.
Since returning from the All-Star break Orlando has collected almost a third of their seasonal wins going 5-4 with two of those losses occurring in overtime.
While they moved ahead of the Rockets with the victories versus the Wolves and Pelicans, it’s fine because they are locked into one of the coveted bottom three seeds with four extra losses than the 27th seeded Thunder.
Head coach, Jamahl Mosley is utilizing a similar lengthy frontcourt version of what the Cavaliers have this season with 7′ Mo Bamba and 6’10 Wendell Carter Jr. And next year they could be taking it a step further if they drop the 6’11 Jonathan Isaac into the small forward position.
With Bamba and Isaac’s ability to shoot from the perimeter and the team’s defensive mindset, there are bright days ahead in Orlando, especially if they nab the top draft pick with ironically big men talents at the top of the draft.
Gary Harris (knee) and Jalen Suggs (ankle) are questionable to play Tuesday. Jonathan Isaac (knee), and Bol Bol (foot) are out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 road games.
- Orlando is 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games.
- The Nets are 7-21 ATS in their last 28 games as a favorite.
- The Magic are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games playing on 1 day’s rest.
- The total has gone OVER in 11 of Brooklyn’s last 16 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 5 of Orlando’s last 6 games.
Brooklyn Nets vs. Orlando Magic NBA Analysis:
With both KD and Irving participating the Nets should have this game in the bag although they can’t afford to take Orlando for granted and will need to be cognizant of their length.
I like Brooklyn to win but with the recent scrappiness of Orlando, I think they keep the score within the range of the 9.5 point spread.
