On Monday, October 24th, the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies play for the first time this season. While most teams played a trio of games the first week of the season the Nets only played twice.
Brooklyn hung on to beat the Raptors in clutch time on Friday to earn their first victory of the season while the Grizzlies lost their first game on Saturday in a blowout at the hands of the Mavericks.
Memphis won both meetings last season with Ja Morant putting on a show at the Barclays Center (118-104) dropping 36 points, eight assists, and six rebounds but wasn’t available for the match in Memphis although the Grizzlies won that meeting handily (132-120).
The Grizzlies hold the all-time record with 28 wins in 51 matches versus the Nets.
Brooklyn Nets
Following an embarrassing opening night rout to the Pelicans the Nets served up a better effort in their win Friday.
In spite of the win, they still look very disjointed on both sides of the floor a factor that may improve once Joe Harris (who returned Friday) and Seth Curry are back to offer better floor spacing.
Toronto shot the ball better both from the field and perimeter. The Raptors doubled up the Nets on fast break scoring, were plus seven on points scored off turnovers, and also won the paint-scoring battle.
The Nets had the advantage at the charity stripe and the extra 11 free throws ultimately was the narrow edge they needed to collect the ‘W’.
Although an extremely small sample size, their 28th-ranked defense isn’t surprising as they often resort to grabbing, pushing, and flailing rather than running anything resembling a disciplined defensive scheme.
Similarly, the offense frequently grinds to a halt with Irving and Durant taking turns utilizing iso-ball sets, especially in clutch time.
The one time Irving opted out of that strategy was on the game-winning shot. He nearly turned over the ball as the Raptors pressured passing it to Royce O’Neale with two seconds remaining on the shot clock who hit his only 3-pointer of the night (1-4).
Ben Simmons is clearly still not fully acclimated as he continues to appear allergic to offense frequently giving up a wide-open shot to pass to a teammate.
Seth Curry (ankle) is questionable for Monday. TJ Warren (foot) is out.
Memphis Grizzlies
After two victories the Grizzlies were up against it in Dallas. Memphis was playing the tail end of their first back-to-back set on the road while the Mavericks had been resting since Wednesday.
The fatigue was obvious as Dallas pounced on the Grizz building a 22-point lead in the first quarter winning areas Memphis typically dominates like hustle categories and rebounding.
Dallas owned the glass (52-29) almost tripling the Grizzlies’ output on the offensive boards (15-6). The sheer size of the Mavs was too much combined with their rested legs resulting in coach Taylor Jenkins conceding early electing not to push his starters.
Morant who registered 34 and 49-point efforts had a relatively quiet night for him with only 20 points taking half the shot attempts he averaged in the two prior outings.
Jenkins went 13 deep and while the Grizz have frequently capitalized on their next man up mentality there is only so much depth he could rely on with Dillon Brook, Ziaire Williams, and Jaren Jackson Jr. all unavailable.
To that end. Brooks (thigh) and Williams (knee) are questionable for Monday. Jaren Jackson Jr. (foot) and Danny Green (knee) are out.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 10-4-1 ATS in their last 15 road game
- The Grizzlies are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 home games
- Under is 4-1 in Nets’ last 5 road games.
- Over is 4-1 in Grizzlies’ last 5 overall.
- The Nets are 0-6 ATS in the last 6 meetings versus the Grizzlies.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Memphis Grizzlies NBA Prediction:
Just as the Pelicans and Raptors caused the Nets nightmares on defense the Grizzlies will be another squad that should give them fits.
Although it’s early and there is time for Brooklyn to gel it seems they would be far more lethal offensively if they were getting out on the break and pushing pace instead of Irving and KD’s penchant for iso-ball.
Even with the Grizzlies missing key cogs, they have an identity that is clear and I like them to take the match and cover.
