Saturday, November 12th, the Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers meet for the first of two occasions this season. Brooklyn will host the second match on February 6th.
Both teams last played Wednesday facing their State counterparts with the Nets routing the Knicks 112-85 while the Clippers defeated the Lakers 114-100.
Last season, the teams split their two contests. The Nets hold the all-time record having bested the Clippers in 52 of their 96 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
This is the front side of a back-to-back versus both Crypto.com residents with the Lakers waiting to face them tomorrow.
Brooklyn is on a four-game road trip and will play seven of their next eight away from Barclays giving them a chance to gel with newly hired head coach Jacque Vaughn.
Presumably, the Nets front office and ownership decided to move away from drama with this selection which might be the smartest decision they’ve made during the past two seasons.
That’s not to suggest signing Kevin Durant was a bad move. Rather, because they handed him the keys it meant also signing Kyrie Irving (eventually James Harden) and DeAndre Jordan.
KD likes to lead by example and Kyrie wants to be the vocal leader so suddenly the culture and identity decisions were being made by a player who is disruptive, combative, and yes selfish because his decisions are always more important than what’s best for the team.
It was a disaster waiting to happen.
Brooklyn has won three of four since Vaughn took over (on an easier segment of their schedule) with this match being the fifth Irving will miss and could mean if he’s appeased ownership he could be back on the court as early as Sunday versus the Lakers.
Brooklyn allows opponents to score 109.3 points per game (9th) and made huge strides defensively holding opponents to 43.9% field percentage tied for second-best. They aren’t as successful on the perimeter though, with opponents shooting 37.8% which ranks 25th.
It’s a mixed bag on offense where the Nets average 110.7 points per game (19th), shooting 47.6% from the (8th) and 35.7% from the perimeter (16th).
Yuta Watanabe (ankle) is questionable for Saturday. Kyrie Irving remains out serving a suspension and TJ Warren (foot) is out but expected to return in early November.
LA Clippers
The Clippers moved up to sixth in the West with the win over the Lakers but there are still ample questions to resolve, not the least of which is the health of their superstar Kawhi Leonard.
Opponents score the sixth-fewest points per game (107.0) while the Clippers hold them to 44.6 percent from the field and 34.1 percent from the perimeter which ranks fifth and sixth respectively.
Highlighting their struggles on offense, the Clippers score the fewest points in the league with 104.7 per game. From an efficiency standpoint, the Clippers fare better tied for sixth with the Kings for field goal percentage (47.7%).
Last season the Clippers were one of the most lethal 3-point shooting teams but are struggling in this early season to find that proficiency shooting 33.6% to rank 21st overall.
Kawhi Leonard (knee) remains out with no indication of his return date.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The Clippers are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Brooklyn’s last 6 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Clippers’ last 7 games.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. LA Clippers NBA Prediction:
Both teams appear to be succeeding defensively and also have benefited from easier starting schedules. As they begin to face tougher competition and longer road trips their identities will be made clearer.
The Nets are in the middle of one of those segments now while LA won’t experience it until the next quarter.
As such, I like the Clippers to win this match and cover.
