We took the Nets with the points on Monday night and they came out the straight-up winners against Boston, 109–102 at the Barclays Center.
Brooklyn shortened the rotation without Shabazz Napier and others. D’Angelo Russell had a huge night with 34 points, seven assists and five rebounds. Rodions Kurucs went for nineteen.
The twenty-year-old Latvian looks like a good one. After playing in his home country and then for FC Barcelona, Kurucs went 40th overall in the most recent NBA Draft. Right now, he’s one of the best rookies going in the Eastern Conference, which is exactly what the Nets, starved of recent draft choices, needed.
Napier, Jared Dudley, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson and Allen Crabbe should all be back within the week for the Nets. In the meantime, Brooklyn looks pretty good with the short rotation.
The Rockets shoot a lot of three’s; that we know. But the Nets are fourth in the NBA in 3-point attempts. This one could be seriously run-and-gun.
Houston increased its lead in the Southwest Division with a win over Memphis, coupled with San Antonio’s loss to the Hornets.
James Harden scored 57 points with nine assists. I’m sure there’s another crazy tidbit about all the scoring he’s done in the last month-plus. It’s been wild.
My question is: what will be the cost? The minutes and usage have been huge after a long MVP season a year ago. Harden ran out of gas in the playoffs two seasons back and wasn’t at the top of his game against the Warriors in the Conference Finals last season.
It’s hard to imagine he’s going to be at the level needed to carry the Rockets through the playoffs, if he’s even capable of such a task in the West. In fact, I still think San Antonio is a nifty division future, though it’s going through health problems itself, because of the possibility of Harden simply going down.
Chris Paul isn’t supposed to return until the end of this month, at the earliest. Eric Gordon is still struggling to get back from his own knee injury.
The Rockets are staying afloat because of one man’s tremendous production but I’m skeptical that it can last as long as Houston needs it to.

Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Houston Rockets NBA Prediction: over.
The Nets are scrappy but I don’t know if they’re stopping Houston at home. Spencer Dinwiddie could prove a difference-maker as a defender on Harden.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Rockets -3.5
I’m going over, though.
