Monday, November 7th, the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks finish their season series having already played on October 27th in a game the Mavericks won 129-125 in overtime.
Brooklyn last played Saturday in a 98-94 winning effort versus the Hornets while Mavericks last played Friday hanging on to defeat the Raptors by a single point (111-110).
Last season, the squads split their two contests. The Mavericks hold the all-time record having bested the Nets in 49 of their 82 matches.
Brooklyn Nets
It’s been a dumpster fire in Brooklyn this entire season, but this past week the situation hit what we should assume is rock bottom (if not – I hesitate to think how much lower it could go).
Head coach, Steve Nash was fired and Brooklyn is discussing hiring Ime Udoka who was suspended for the year by the Celtics.
Kyrie Irving ignored/avoided multiple opportunities to apologize and clarify he was not anti-semantic, however shortly after the Nets suspended him without pay for a minimum of five games he finally delivered the apology the organization and league were seeking.
At this stage, it’s not far-fetched to believe he may have played his last game for the Nets, and it’s hard to imagine any franchise would welcome adding him to their locker room.
On top of the Irving mess, Ben Simmons has struggled and now is missing games with a reported sore knee.
After his offseason trade demand, you have to wonder where Kevin Durant’s head is at following this past week with the exit of Nash (don’t forget KD also wanted Marks gone) and the constant turmoil and attention the Irving situation creates.
Brooklyn scores 112.1 points per game to rank 18th. The Nets are shooting 47.9 percent from the field and 35.2.% from the perimeter which ranks fifth and 17th respectively.
On defense, there is ample work to do with opponents averaging 113 points per game to rank 14th although they benefitted greatly from the Hornets’ game holding them under 100 points.
Efficiency-wise, Nets opponents shoot 45 percent from the field and a robust 38.6 percent from above the arc ranking seventh and 28th. The latter wouldn’t be so terrible if Brooklyn ran their foes off the 3-point line but they allow 35.5 attempts (ranks 23rd) per game.
Ben Simmons (knee) is questionable for Monday. Kyrie Irving (suspension) is out for at least five games serving the team-mandated suspension. TJ Warren (foot) is expected to return in early November.
Dallas Mavericks
If you haven’t caught a Mavericks game this season put it on your list of must-watch games this week. Luka Doncic has always been special but he’s taken a palpable step upward this season.
Friday offered a perfect example of just how unstoppable the youngster has become as defensive guru Nick Nurse threw everything but the kitchen sink at him. Granted he held Doncic below his seasonal averages BUT BARELY (35 points, eight rebounds, six assists).
On the season, the MVP front-runner is averaging 36 points 8.8 rebounds, and 8.6 assists.
The move by Jason Kidd to reinsert Dwight Powell into the starting rotation is paying dividends and while his box score stats might not jump off the page he does all the little things that matter
Whether it’s boxing out an opponent so his teammate can clear the glass or setting a bone-jarring screen and resetting another immediately to free up Luka or the shooters his effect on the court is noticeable.
Someone perhaps not thrilled by this change is Christian Wood who was demonstrative about his objection to being subbed out late in the match Friday.
Wood is doing a great job offensively, but trust me when I tell you there’s a reason teams keep erasing double-digit Mavericks leads in fourth quarters and Wood is part of the problem.
Although his on/off-court stats aren’t terrible his plus +3.5 pales in comparison to Powell’s impact of plus +34.7!
The Mavericks are scoring 115.1 points per game which is tied for 10th while they’re shooting 48.3% from the field and 35% from the perimeter ranking second and 18th respectively.
Defensively, Dallas has remained committed to abandoning the offensive glass in exchange for getting back in transition and that’s probably why they are in a three-way tie for opponent points scored per game (109.1) with the Heat and Blazers.
Opponents are shooting 47.4% from the field (23rd) and 33.2% from the perimeter (tied 7th).
Frank Ntilikina (ankle) and Davis Bertains (knee) are questionable for Monday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- The Nets are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games.
- The Mavericks are 1-4-1 ATS in their previous 6 games.
- Brooklyn is 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games against Dallas.
- Dallas is 16-3 SU in their last 19 games at home.
Free Brooklyn Nets vs. Dallas Mavericks NBA Prediction:
Although the Mavericks haven’t found their 3-point rhythm yet this might be the game they break out given how poorly the Nets defend the perimeter and the number of open looks they’ll give up.
That factor, plus how well Dallas plays on their home court should equate to an easy victory for Luka and Co.
