Missing key personnel the Boston Celtics didn’t miss a beat winning the second game of the series versus the Philadelphia 76ers more impressively than their first match.
Boston Celtics
The big news for the Bean Town crew is the injury to forward Gordon Hayward who sprained his right ankle in game one.
The team updated that Hayward’s injury is a grade three sprain that will keep him off the hardcourt for approximately a month.
Without Hayward, the trio of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Kemba Walker stepped up to carry the offense and put pressure on the 76ers.
Tatum led the way seemingly scoring at will and finished with 33 points, five assists, and five rebounds. Brown dropping 20 points and five rebounds. Walker had his best game in the bubble with 22 points, two assists, and four rebounds.
Marcus Smart got the start contributing stellar defense while chipping in 10 points and Enes Kanter was big off the bench with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Javonte Green is questionable for Friday with a right knee sprain.
Philadelphia 76ers
Joel Embiid said he would need to do more and required more touches for the 76ers to win. Early in the match, it looked like he was going to be prophetic.
The big man couldn’t miss but the others on the floor weren’t doing their share and worse, weren’t giving defensive effort.
Embiid finished with a strong double-double of 34 points and 10 rebounds. Unfortunately, his teammates weren’t able to score enough or defend well enough to make a dent in Boston’s offensive outburst.
Tobias Harris who delivered a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds needs to do more. Josh Richardson scored early but trailed off in the second half, finishing with 18 points. Shake Milton (14) was the only other double-figure contributor.
Although Ben Simmons would never be pegged as an offensive power his defense is sorely missed by the 76ers who need to take a long hard look in the mirror prior to Game 3.
The 76ers can pull from last season as an example when the Raptors trailed the Bucks 0-2 and won the next four games, but it has to start on the defensive side of the hardwood.
Glenn Robinson III remains out with an oblique muscle strain.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Over is 11-4-1 in BOS last 16 games as a favorite.
- Over is 7-2 in PHI last 9 games as an underdog.
- Over is 12-4 in PHI last 16 overall.
Free Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
The key difference in the two games has come beyond the arc and from the reserve units. Boston has hit 29 perimeter shots versus the 76ers 14 with only five of those coming in the second game.
The Celtics bench outscored the 76ers 41-20 in the second match and that variance has to be fixed if Philly want to make this a series.
4* Free NBA Betting Pick: Celtics -5
The body language of the 76ers sure didn’t do much to bolster the belief they were still invested in winning. Rather, it seemed like once Boston took the lead they were already making plans to leave the bubble.
It’s gut-check time for the 76ers and Brett Brown’s job is likely on the line – – can he inspire his squad to play for him?
***NOTE*** In case you missed it…When the 2020 NBA 16-team playoff field is set, the NBA Playoffs will proceed in a traditional conference-based format with four rounds and best-of-seven series in each round. The 2020 NBA Finals will end no later than Oct. 13.
