Sunday, May 7th, the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers continue their semi-finals playoff series. Boston took the series lead with a 114-102 victory in Game 3.
Wells Fargo lit up pre-game as Joel Embiid was presented with the Most Valuable Player trophy prior but the team wasn’t able to ride that momentum wave.
ATS
At this time the Celtics are 51-39-1 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 24-20-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the 76ers are 52-36-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 27-17 ATS as the home team
Season Series
Boston won the season series 3-1 with victories on October 18th (126-117), February 8th (106-99), and 25th (110-107) while the 76ers took the final meeting 103-101 on April 4th.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 267 times of the club’s 463 meetings, last year the teams played four times with the Celtics winning three of the four contests.
The teams have a long history of meeting in the postseason facing each other in 21 times with Boston possessing the advantage 14 to 7 including the last meeting in 2020 when the Celts swept the 76ers.
Boston Celtics
Having served up several lackluster efforts recently taking Game 3 in Philly on the night Joel Embiid received his MVP award was arguably the Celtics’ most important playoff win in 2023.
As expected Tatum rebounded from a sub-par personal performance to lead the Celts with a double-double of 27 points and 10 rebounds. Jaylen Brown offered another consistent effort with 23 points while the entire starting lineup (plus Malcolm Brogdon) scored in double-figures.
Stats
On the positive side, Boston claims the fourth-best point production averaging 117.9 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th and sixth respectively.
Presently, opponents average 111.4 points per game which rank fifth. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.3% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking fifth and fourth respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Blake Griffin PF (OUT — back)
- Danilo Gallinari, SF (OUT indefinitely — ACL)
Philadelphia 76ers
Two teams I’ve had a hard time getting on board with to be title contenders are the Lakers and 76ers and while they both boast duo superstar talents they also have a commonality of one of the two stars not consistently giving us reason to trust them.
In fairness, Anthony Davis has a title but his vacillating effort every other game is still frustrating. In the case of James Harden, he has more negative than positive postseason examples.
And, it’s not like the Sixers needed him to score 45 points as he did in Game 1. Rather, they just need him to play his role and provide a scoring option to Embiid.
Instead, he shot 3 of 14 with half of his 16 points collected at the line. Certainly, it didn’t help that Tyrese Maxey was 4 of 16 (13 points) albeit the Celtics’ defense has to get part of the credit.
Stats
So far this season, the 76ers score an average of 115.2 points per game ranking 14th. Philly shoots 48.7% from the field and 38.7% from the perimeter, ranking sixth and first respectively.
What’s more, defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the third-fewest opponent points per game with 110.9 and the fifth-best perimeter defense at 34.8% while ranking 14th for opponent field goal percentage allowing opponents to shoot 47.3%.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Joel Embiid C (probable —knee)

Free Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
To be fair, there wasn’t a lot to separate the teams statistically in Game 3 with both teams collecting nine offensive boards and hitting 13 triples. The largest stat differential was fast-break scoring with Boston leading 15 to 7.
Joel Embiid delivered in Game 3 (30 points, 13 rebounds, three assists, four blocks) but needs help from at least one of Harden, Harris, or Maxey if Philly is going to level the series.
It’s a must-win for the 76ers and the question that looms — has Boston truly gotten over their penchant to play to the level of the opponent looking to flip the switch late?
