The semi-finals series between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers shifts venues after two games in Beantown with the series all even.
Newly crowned MVP, Joel Embiid made his return to the court for Game 2 but the Celtics hammered the 76ers with a 121-87 blowout.
ATS
At this time the Celtics are 50-39-1 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 23-20-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the 76ers are 52-35-1 against the spread this season. Also, they are 27-16 ATS as the home team
Season Series
Boston won the season series 3-1 with victories on October 18th (126-117), February 8th (106-99), and 25th (110-107) while the 76ers took the final meeting 103-101 on April 4th.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 267 times of the club’s 463 meetings, last year the teams played four times with the Celtics winning three of the four contests.
The teams have a long history of meeting in the postseason facing each other in 21 times with Boston possessing the advantage 14 to 7 including the last meeting in 2020 when the Celts swept the 76ers.
Boston Celtics
It wasn’t surprising that the Celtics won Game 2, however, it did offer ample evidence for why this roster is so frustrating.
The Bean Town crew dominated the 76ers in spite of Embiid being back on the court and if Boston loses the series their lackadaisical approach to Game 1 will come back to haunt them.
Dive deeper and the fact Jayson Tatum was 1 of 7 from the floor punctuates the depth of talent on this roster. Tatum still managed to be a +24 while Jaylen Brown led the squad with 25 points.
Stats
On the positive side, Boston claims the fourth-best point production averaging 117.9 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th and sixth respectively.
Presently, opponents average 111.4 points per game which rank fifth. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.3% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking fifth and fourth respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Danilo Gallinari, SF (OUT indefinitely — ACL)
Philadelphia 76ers
Some felt bringing Embiid back for Game 2 was a mistake, but after being off the court since April 20 there is an argument getting him eased back into the rotation was equally important.
The big man played 26:37 offering 15 points, three rebounds, and five blocks. Unfortunately, his return coincided with James Harden shifting how he approached the match.
Harden was otherworldly in Game 1 producing 45 points, six assists, and connecting on 7 of his 14 triples. However, in Game 2 he shot 2 of 14 from the field and 0 of 6 from deep collecting just 12 points.
Stats
So far this season, the 76ers score an average of 115.2 points per game ranking 14th. Philly shoots 48.7% from the field and 38.7% from the perimeter, ranking sixth and first respectively.
What’s more, defense is where the 76ers make their mark allowing the third-fewest opponent points per game with 110.9 and the fifth-best perimeter defense at 34.8% while ranking 14th for opponent field goal percentage allowing opponents to shoot 47.3%.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Joel Embiid C (probable —knee)

Free Boston Celtics vs. Philadelphia 76ers NBA Prediction:
Even with Boston’s depth Robert Williams III and Al Horford can’t stop Embiid but the trick will be reintegrating him while getting Harden to play closer to how he did in Game 1.
Clearly, Doc Rivers needs to make adjustments which is tricky given the 76ers played with much greater pace in the victory but Joel prefers half-court sets, and the ball sticks if he’s the primary ball handler.
Perhaps waiting until clutch time to integrate the latter is Rivers’ best bet, but one thing is certain, Wells Fargo will be lit with pre-game festivities helping as Embiid is awarded the MVP trophy.
The only question is which version of the Celtics shows up. I’m betting on the best iteration and Tatum having a bounce-back effort.
