The Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat arrives at Game 4 on Tuesday with the potential for the series to be over. Miami punched the Celtics in the mouth to take a 3-0 lead in the series with a 128-102 rout on Sunday.
Brooms will be on display at Kaseya Center on Tuesday as the eighth-seeded Heat look to sweep the team most analysts projected to win the title.
ATS
At this time, the Celtics are 53-44-1 overall against the spread this season. Also, they are 25-22-1 ATS as the away team. Additionally, the Heat are 42-53-3 against the spread this season. Also, they are 20-27-2 ATS as the home team.
Season Series
The teams split the regular season series 2-2 with Boston winning the first two meetings on October 21st (111-104) and November 30th (134-121) while the Heat took the latter two contests on December 2nd (120-116 in overtime) and January 24th (98-95).
This is the sixth time the clubs are facing each other in the postseason with Miami ahead 3-2 all-time. It’s the third time in the last four seasons the teams have met in the Conference Finals with the Celtics winning last season 4-3.
Boston Celtics
While the Heat didn’t need their superstars to put up big numbers the opposite was true for the Celtics who rely so heavily on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to lead them.
Boston’s stars had their worst collective postseason performances although Tatum scored fewer points (7) in Game 2 versus the 76ers, Brown dropped 25 in that match.
But in Game 3, Tatum and Brown combined to score 26 points shooting 12 of 35 from the field and 1 of 14 from deep.
Joe Mazzulla took all the blame in the post-game presser and in fairness, he’s been severely outcoached by the master Erik Spoelstra.
But while Mazzulla definitely deserves a big portion of the blame pie for his lack of adjustments, holding onto timeouts, and a seeming absence of a defensive scheme he’s not the one on the hardwood shooting and defending.
Five Celtics scored in double-figures with Tatum the high man with 14 points while all the starters except Marcus Smart had double-digit minus performances with Brown -25 leading the way – – enough said.
Stats
On the positive side, Boston claims the fourth-best point production averaging 117.9 points per game. In terms of efficiency, they shoot 47.5% from the field and 37.6% from the perimeter ranking 15th and sixth respectively.
Presently, opponents average 111.4 points per game which rank fifth. Celtics opponents are limited to 46.3% from the field and 34.5% from the perimeter ranking fifth and fourth respectively.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Danilo Gallinari, SF (OUT indefinitely — ACL)
Miami Heat
Jimmy Butler (16 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals) and Bam Adebayo (13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists) had relatively quiet nights but it didn’t matter. It was a complete team effort in Game 3 for the Heat with their support players stepping up in the rout.
Gabe Vincent led the way for the Heat with 29 points including 6 of 9 from deep. Duncan Robinson who was saddled to the bench for most of the season has flourished in his postseason appearances having expanded his offensive versatility offering 22 points in the Game 3 victory.
Six Heat players collected double-digit scores in the rout but Kevin Love suffered an early injury (ankle and/or thigh) that witnessed him play only six minutes and his status for Game 4 is questionable.
Stats
Offensively, the Heat scores 109.5 points per game ranking 30th while shooting 46% from the field and 34.4% from the perimeter ranking 26th and 27th respectively.
Defensively, the Heat allows opponents to score 109.8 points per game ranking second overall. Miami opponents shoot 48.2% from the field and 36.7% from the perimeter with both efficiency categories ranking 22nd.
Injury Report
To summarize the injury report…
- Kevin Love PF (questionable after leaving last game— ankle)
- Victor Oladipo SG (OUT— knee)
- Tyler Herro SG (OUT— fingers/hand)

Free Boston Celtics vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
I’ve repeatedly given the Celtics the benefit of the doubt believing their talent, depth, and experience would eventually kick in but it was clear early in the second quarter on Sunday that the Bean Town crew has already checked out of this series.
It only took four games for the oddsmakers to finally favor the Heat despite having outplayed the Celtics and I believe they got that prediction right.
UPDATE: The motivation for the Heat to sweep intensified with the Nuggets sweeping the Lakers because every extra game Miami has to play means Denver is at home getting a rest advantage so I’m doubling down on the series finishing Tuesday.
