On Sunday, April 10, the Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies play the second and final meeting of this season. Boston won the initial meeting 120-107 on March 3rd.
Boston has been off since Thursday following a 121-127 losing effort to the Bucks, while the Grizzlies are completing a back-to-back set having crushed the Pelicans 141-114 on Saturday.
Last season, the squads played twice with each club winning on their home court. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Grizzlies in 32 of their 51 matches.
Boston Celtics
While the Heat secured the top seed in the Eastern Conference the other three home court seeds are still undecided with the Bucks, Celtics, and 76ers all looking to secure their spots.
Milwaukee has the most control of their own destiny as a win versus the Cavs would nail down the second seed (or a loss by the Celtics). The reverse scenario with the Celtics winning and the Bucks losing would clinch the second spot for Boston and third seed for Milwaukee.
Boston is in a bit of a precarious position, especially now that the Bucks have taken a one-game lead over both the Celtics and the 76ers. Milwaukee is muddying the waters even further based on the fact they’ve listed most of their core as doubtful to play versus the Cavs.
It’s a risk the Bucks can take with the hope they fall to third to align with the easier Bulls in the first round.
Boston doesn’t have that same freedom because the 76ers are playing the Pistons and if they win but the Celtics lose they would fall to fourth and have to play the red hot Raptors.
Realistically, the third seed is the one both the Celtics and 76ers prefer given the opponents are the Raptors in fifth and the Bulls in sixth, and Toronto is playing much better ball to finish the season.
Al Horford (back) and Jayson Tatum (knee) were upgraded to probable while Nik Stauskas (ankle) was downgraded to out on Sunday. Robert Williams III (knee) underwent knee surgery to deal with a slightly torn meniscus and will be out between four and six weeks.
Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are locked into the second seed and will await the winner of the Timberwolves – Clippers play-in game to determine who they play in the first round.
The questions surrounding Ja Morant’s knee got put to rest on Saturday as the young superstar returned to the hardcourt looking fresh and healthy. He played 27 minutes in his first game back after missing the last nine producing 21 points, nine assists, four rebounds, and a block.
Dillon Brooks was the top scorer with 23 points. Seven Grizzlies scored in double-figures including Brandon Clarke (20), Ziaire Williams (19), Desmond Banes (18), De’Anthony Melton(12), and Jaren Jackson Jr. (12).
Jarrett Culver (knee), Tyrell Terry (foot), and Killian Tillie (knee) are all questionable for Sunday.

The real question is whether the Celtics are confident they can beat the Nets and prefer having home court through two rounds of play or whether it’s worth risking falling to fourth to face the Raptors by trying to get the third seed instead knowing the 76ers will likely beat the Pistons.
Memphis is 7-6 in second games of back-to-backs and although Morant isn’t listed on the injury report it seems highly unlikely the Grizz would chance him getting hurt in the final game of the season. If he does play expect his minutes to be heavily reduced.
Given who the Celtics are dressing my guess is they aren’t taking any chances and want to land in the second or third seed and not risk falling to fourth.
