Game 5 of the NBA Finals between the Golden State Warriors and Boston Celtics tips off Monday, June 13th with the teams all knotted at two victories each.
The teams split the 2021-22 season series 1-1. This is the first time since 1964 that these teams have met in the playoffs. In the Steve Kerr era, the Celtics have the best record against his Warriors.
Boston Celtics
While the trio of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Marcus Smart combined to score 62 of the Celtics’ 97 points they were far from efficient missing 35 shots.
The second half in particular was telling with Tatum shooting 2 of 9 while Smart (5-12) and Brown (4-11) didn’t fare much better.
For the first time in nine occasions, Boston lost when Smart scored 18 points and it has to be noted both Smart and Tatum attempted as many shots as they produced in points with Tatum shooting 8 of 23.
Two other stats that are harbingers for Celtics wins versus losses are turnovers and Tatum assists. When Boston has 15 or fewer turnovers they are 14-2 but are 0-6 when they hit 16 turnovers.
Likewise, when Tatum dishes seven or more assists the Celts are 7-0 and are 7-8 when he registers six or fewer assists.
Robert Williams III (knee) had to check out of the game at 3:41 of the final frame after tweaking his knee. At the time the Dubs led 97-94, but without Williams, the Celts struggled to defend or score with Golden State closing the match on a 10-3 run.
As he has been throughout the series, Williams is listed as questionable.
Golden State Warriors
Stephen Curry put on a performance for the ages registering a double-double of 43 points and 10 rebounds plus four assists while hitting seven 3-pointers.
Some of the shots he scored on were of the jaw-dropping variety with Curry seemingly using every little inch or millisecond to take advantage.
Andrew Wiggins was once again the second-best Warriors player also notching a double-double of 17 points and a career-best 16 rebounds.
Klay Thompson (16) and Jordan Poole (14) were the other double-figure scorers.
Aside from Curry’s brilliance, the other big storyline of Game 4 was the lineup moves Steve Kerr made. The coach elected to start Otto Porter Jr. in place of Kevon Looney with the goal of reducing the minutes both Green and Looney are on the court simultaneously.
That resulted in Green being seemingly benched for Looney at 7:32 of the final frame with the Celtics going up 91-86 after a Smart free throw. That tweak seemed to throw off the Celtics’ who struggled with their defensive rotations and the offense getting stagnate.
With his reduced role in the final frame, Green played inspired registering five rebounds, three assists, and a steal in just seven minutes with the majority of that production in the final 3:14 (three rebounds, two assists) albeit with Williams sidelined.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Boston is 13-7 ATS in their last 20 games.
- Golden State is 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 8 of Boston’s last 9 games when playing on the road against Golden State.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Golden State’s last 6 games.
- The Celtics are 9-2-1 ATS in their last 12 games as a road underdog.
- Warriors are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 playoff games as a favorite.
Free Boston Celtics vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:
The Celtics haven’t lost consecutive games in the playoffs but it’s worth noting since they swept the Nets they are 10-8 in their next 18 games. Another win would force the Warriors to have to win the final two games including again in Boston.
Of course, the Game 6 Klay narrative will be rampant regardless of who wins Game 5 but there are other keys to consider such as the health of Robert Williams and whether Kerr will continue to stagger Green and Looney’s minutes to gain spacing and offensive punch.
It worked in Game 4 so presumably, he’ll speak to Draymond who seemed peeved about being benched but in truth Looney has been the better player on defense, rebounding, and even offensively.
Golden State finally broke the Celtics’ fourth-quarter dominance while maintaining their third-quarter prowess although they only won the frame by six points (their lowest of the series).
Pre-series the Warriors’ championship experience was cited as a key but wasn’t prevalent Friday when they won in clutch time. To that end, the Celtics winning margin in eight of the Celtics’ last 10 victories was by double digits.
It’s not a surprise since the Celtics ranked 29th in clutch time (13-22) in the season so if the Warriors keep the games close they have a decided advantage which is why I’m leaning toward them delivering the Celtics’ first back-to-back losses of the postseason.
