Wednesday, March 16th, finds the Boston Celtics playing the Golden State Warriors for the second and final time this season. Golden State won the initial meeting 111-107 on December 17th.
Dallas will host the final meeting between the clubs on March 3rd. The Mavericks last played Friday losing 109-114 to the Jazz while the Warriors played on Thursday routing the Blazers 132-95.
Last season, the teams played twice with the Celtics winning both contests. The Celtics have won 207 of the 345 matches played versus the Warriors all-time.
Boston Celtics
While the Celtics defense was the key to turning around their season it will be intriguing to see how they fare against the better clubs down the stretch. They have moved into the fifth seed and with the way Cleveland is reeling there isn’t too much worry, they could fall back into sixth.
The question is whether they can catch the fourth-seeded Bulls who will play seven of their next eight on the road where they are under .500. Boston is just a half-game back of Chicago.
The Celtics were red-hot winning 18 of 22 games to get into this position and beat some quality clubs during that stretch including the Heat, Nuggets, 76ers, Grizzlies, and Nets three times.
Notably, the Heat and Nets were missing their stars in all but one of those matches. When faced with an equally adept defense the Celtics struggled offensively with the Mavericks able to shut them down and steal the victory on the road.
Dallas held Jayson Tatum to 7 of 23 and Jaylen Brown to 6 of 16 which resulted in Boston only scoring 92 points. Since returning from the All-Star break their top-ranked defense has slid to eighth so that’s something to keep an eye on.
Aaron Nesmith (ankle) is out indefinitely.
Golden State Warriors
With Draymond Green returning to the court the effect was palpable with each of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson looking much more comfortable. Green opens up so much for the Warriors on both ends of the hardwood.
Curry gets better shot opportunities and Thompson simply looks more at ease knowing there are now two primary playmakers who can find him for wide-open shots. In the victory versus the Wizards, Curry erupted for 47 points on 16 of 25 and 7 of 14 from deep adding six rebounds, six assists, and a steal.
Thompson scored 20 points while Green entered off the bench and although his stat line might seem meager (six points, seven rebounds, six assists, steal) his effect was far-reaching. The most notable stat was Green was a team-high plus +24.
Andrew Wiggins (illness) is questionable while Andre Iguodala (back) and Gary Payton II (knee) were downgraded to out on Wednesday versus the Celtics. James Wiseman (knee) is working his way back from injury appearing in games with G-League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors.
