Saturday, February 26th, the Boston Celtics and Detroit Pistons play for the third time this season. Boston won the first meeting on February 4th (102-93) while Detroit prevailed 112-111 just prior to the break on February 16th. Boston will host the final meeting on March 11th.
In fact, the Pistons ended the Celtics’ nine-game winning streak but Boston got right back on track in their first match back from the break on Thursday pounding the Nets 129-106 while the Pistons played the Cavaliers on Thursday also winning (106-103).
Last season, the teams played three times with the Pistons taking two of the three contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Pistons 244 times of their 384 regular-season matches.
Boston Celtics
After falling to the Pistons in a trap game just prior to the break the Celtics certainly took care of business against the Nets in the first game back.
In fairness, Brooklyn was missing their top three players with Kevin Durant still out with the knee strain (although nearing a return), Kyrie Irving not able to play at home due to protocols, and Ben Simmons yet to debut.

They jumped on the Nets scoring 35 points in the opening frame and held Brooklyn to 22 points and never looked back. All five starters and two reserves scored in double-digits.
Jayson Tatum led the way with 30 points, seven rebounds, and four assists while Jalen Brown offered 18 points and six assists plus big men Al Horford (11 points, 13 rebounds) and Robert Williams (12 points, 11 rebounds) registered double-doubles.
Marcus Smart was back from tweaking his ankle offering 15 points, six assists, two steals, and hit five of his six 3-point attempts. Newcomer Derrick White is fitting in well adding 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Grant Williams chipped in 10 points.
Boston is fully healthy.
Detroit Pistons
If the last two games are any indication, the Pistons plan on playing spoiler down the stretch with wins versus the Celtics and Cavaliers. We’ll have to wait and see whether this is just a blip or a concerted effort.
The tell-tale sign will be if they continue this effort and jeopardize winning too much and moving up out of the coveted bottom three seed position that gives teams the best shot of winning the draft lottery and hence the top draft pick.
With this class not expected to be anywhere near as deep as 2021, it’s said only the prize falls in the top three picks.
As for the mini two-game win streak, it offers positive signs for this young club. Cade Cunningham and Jerami Grant appear to be meshing as they led the Pistons in both wins.
The rookie offered 20 points, eight rebounds, and six assists versus Boston and 17 points, six rebounds, six assists, and two blocks versus the Cavs.
Grant was equally impressive with 24 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals versus the Celts and 16 points, three rebounds, an assist, two steals, plus a block against Cleveland.
Frank Jackson (back) is doubtful for Saturday.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Boston is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games.
- Detroit is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Boston’s last 6 games.
- Detroit is 4-2 ATS in their last 6 games against an Eastern opponent
Boston Celtics vs. Detroit Pistons NBA Analysis:
Although the Celtics took the Pistons for granted in the final match they played prior to the break they won’t make that mistake again especially as they try to build a pad between themselves and the current play-in teams.
The games just prior to and just after the All-Star break are earmarked as two of the four most difficult of the year (pre and post-Christmas are the other two).
Young teams typically fall prey to losses in those matches as they tend to not be as focused as a veteran squad. Not only did the Pistons win both of those games but they did it in clutch time beating the Celtics by a single point (112-111) and the Cavs by three points (106-103).
Detroit has the frontcourt and wing size to counter Boston so when the Pistons are focused for a full 48 minutes they become a much tougher out, with this not an ideal matchup for the Celts who should get the win but I’m not keen on the spread.
