Sunday, March 20th finds the Boston Celtics playing the Denver Nuggets for the second and final time this season. Boston won the initial match 108-102 on February 11th.
Both teams last played on Friday with the Celtics beating the Kings 126-97 while the Nuggets lost 116-119 in overtime to the Cavaliers.
Last season the clubs played twice with Boston winning both contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Nuggetsin 58 of their 95 matches.
Boston Celtics
Because the Celtics started off the season so poorly there were still skeptics that pondered is the winning streak was a blip and they would regress back to the mean when they finally faced some of the elite squads.
If the 18-3 record through their last 21 games wasn’t enough then completely annihilating the Warriors this past week likely did the trick. In fact, holding the Warriors to 88 points with all three of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green in the lineup is unheard of.
Mind you, losing Curry in the second quarter didn’t help but Golden State scored just 17 and 15 points in the first and second quarter prior to his injury so the damage was already done.
They continue to rise up the ladder in the East having put 1.5 games between themselves and the Bulls for the fourth seed and now have just a game to make up to catch the Bucks and 76ers. Their consistency and lethal defense are for real and that could push them as high as second (I doubt they can catch the Heat for first).
Aside from Jayson Tatum’s return to the conversation as one of the top 10 and arguably top five players Robert Williams III will draw some love for the Defensive Player of the Year and undoubtedly a few Celts will make one of the two All-Defensive teams.
Ime Udoka might even get some shine from some voters for Coach of the Year.
They are healthy aside from Nesmith and are building toward the postseason with momentum on their side.
Aaron Nesmith (ankle) is upgraded to probable for Sunday.
Denver Nuggets
Following a 12-2 stretch the Nuggets came back down to earth a bit losing three of their last five matches. Two of those games stand out as slightly worrisome.
The loss to the Raptors (who were playing the second game of a back-to-back) and Friday’s loss to the Cavaliers in a game they led by double-digits and one in which the best opponent defender (Jarrett Allen) was sidelined.
However, Nikola Jokic has played so well during these last 20 games he’s pushed ahead of Joel Embiid in many analysts’ minds to capture the MVP. Despite rumblings, Jamal Murray and/or Michael Porter Jr. could return there is no sign of that occurring or updates offering hints they will.
Zeke Nnaji (hamstring) is downgraded to out on Sunday. Vlatko Cancar (fractured foot), and Jamal Murry (ACL) are out indefinitely while Michael Porter Jr. (back surgery) is presumed out for the season.
