Wednesday, November 2nd finds the Boston Celtics facing the Cleveland Cavaliers in the second of four meetings this season. The initial match was won by the Cavaliers 132-123 in an overtime thriller.
Cleveland will host again on March 1st and Boston will host the final contest between these clubs on March 6th.
Both squads got some extended rest last playing on Sunday with the Cavaliers defeating the Knicks 121-108 and the Celtics beating the Wizards 112-94.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Celtics winning two of the three contests. The Celtics hold the all-time record having bested the Cavaliers in 136 of their 220 matches.
Boston Celtics
A commonality of this iteration of the Celtics versus last season (especially early) was they have a tendency to fall in love with the offense and ignore the defensive side of the floor.
Granted, with Robert Williams III sidelined maybe the players just aren’t invested in killing themselves on defense especially when they’re winning.
Their prowess (or commitment) to one end versus the other is reflected in the scoring and efficiency stats…
Boston scores 116.7 points per 100 possessions which ranks 12th. They shoot 47.9% from the field (5th) and 39.9% from the perimeter (3rd).
On defense, they allow 114.5 points per 100 possessions ranking 18th and opponents are shooting 46.8 percent from the field (tied 18th) and 37.9 percent from the perimeter (24th).
Again, this might just be a blip or it might be a factor of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown knowing they’ll kick it up a notch when RWill returns. The potential issue with that is losing the habit of playing good defense and/or being able to flip the switch.
Robert Williams III (knee) is out indefinitely. Danilo Gallinari (ACL) is lost for the season.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cavaliers are excelling in certain areas of the defense that has pushed them to the next level early this season. One of those areas is limiting opponent scoring – – 105.7 points per 100 possessions which ranks 2nd.
In terms of efficiency, opponents are shooting 45.9 percent from the field (11th) but they have work to do on perimeter defense allowing opponents to shoot 35.7 percent from deep (20th).
On the offensive side of the ball the Cavs are the belle of the ball from the perimeter leading the league shooting 42.7% from deep and they rank 8th both for field goal percentage (47.8%) and points per 100 possessions (117.7).
Donovan Mitchell is absolutely feasting as a Cav averaging 32.2 points 7.3 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game plus he’s murdering teams from deep shooting a blistering 45.5% and attempting a substantial amount (9.2 per game).
Darius Garland (eye) and Dylan Windler (ankle) are questionable for Wednesday while Ricky Rubio (knee) is out indefinitely.
NBA Betting Trends:
- Boston are 3-6 ATS in their last 9 games.
- Cleveland are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 6 of Boston’s last 9 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Cleveland’s last 5 games.
Free Boston Celtics vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction:
The Celtics found out the hard way what happens when they don’t play disciplined defense against a team with length losing to the Cavs Friday.
Mitchell has been functioning as the primary ball handler – – a role he’s very accustomed to by the way. Garland is nearing a return and is absolutely the more talented individual (compared to LeVert) but I won’t be surprised if his return coincides with some slippage.
That’s because Mitchell and Garland still have to develop chemistry and flow between them and the nuances involved in gaining that familiarity will take time and reps.
The spread opened favoring the Cavaliers and has shifted back to the Celtics as of posting.
The Celts will be seeking revenge for the loss last week, but the Cavs home court has become a very tough environment for visitors to win in. As crazy as it sounds the only way I vacillate off Cleveland is if Garland returns (if that happens swap Boston to win a close one).
