Giannis Antetokounmpo put up MVP numbers in a low-scoring, 98–97 win over Boston on Thursday night.
The Greek Freak finished with 30 points, 13 rebounds and six assists and Khris Middleton chipped in 15. Kyrie Irving and Al Horford combined to score 43 points and 10 assists for the Celtics, who won both the third and fourth quarters but came up just the one point short.
Boston was without Aron Baynes and Gordon Hayward. Baynes has a foot problem and will miss this game, plus at least one more. Hayward hurt his ankle during a workout with Semi Ojeleye over the break and was listed as questionable prior to tip. He very well could play in this game but we’ll have to wait for a more certain word.
As the Eastern Conference looks at the moment, Boston would travel to Indiana in the first round. How would the Celtics feel about such a matchup? Surely, they would prefer to be at home but they probably wouldn’t mind getting an Oladipo-less Indiana squad in a seven-game series.
There’s a long way to go. The Celtics won’t fall any lower than fifth in the East, though.
The Bulls are in Orlando on Friday night before hosting this one on Saturday. They finished the pre-break stretch with their 14th win of the season by beating the Grizzlies in Chicago.
Those 14 wins are better than only New York and Cleveland in the East and Phoenix out West. The three worst teams in the league have an equal shot, about 14 percent, at the top pick. Right now, the Bulls and Cavaliers are jockeying for that final spot because Phoenix and New York look determined to be there and they are on the inside track.
Kris Dunn should be back after missing a couple games before the break with a back problem. He practiced this week and the expectation is that he’ll play. Wendell Carter Jr. remains out and it appears his rookie season is done after a procedure on his thumb.
Otto Porter Jr. was cooking as a Bull in the four games he played before the break, helping his team win two of them with 22.5 points per game on 62 percent shooting (58 percent from three).
He’ll come back down to Earth but it looks like he’s going to get every opportunity to be a big scorer in Chicago. He was constantly criticized for being too passive in Washington, despite being the Wizards’ third banana.

Free Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls NBA Prediction: Boston on the road.
I’ve got the Celtics by at least 10. I’d take them to cover anything under eight. Once you get around 8.5, 9.0, there just isn’t enough value.
