Game four between the Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics occurs on Monday, April 25th. With victories in Game (115-114), Game 2 (114-107), and Game 3 (109-103) the Bean Town crew are seeking a series sweep.
Boston holds the all-time advantage having won 134 times of the club’s 207 meetings, however, Brooklyn has the playoff edge having won all three prior series including the 2002 Conference Finals (4-2), 2003 Semi-Finals (4-0), and 2021 first round (4-1).
Boston Celtics
With oddsmakers frequently picking the Nets to come out of the East, the Celtics had other things in mind and didn’t shy away from grabbing the second seed knowing it would likely mean a first-round match versus Brooklyn.
Now as the teams enter game four the Celtics will try to do what the 76ers and Warriors couldn’t by getting the first-round sweep. Although the opening game of the series came down to a game-winning shot at the buzzer the Nets haven’t been close since.
Sure the final scores of Games 2 and 3 look like competitive matches but frankly, both matches were over much earlier. Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have put to rest the narrative they can’t play together and have been the more productive superstar duo in the series.
The big news in Game 3 was the return of Robert Williams III who underwent knee surgery to repair a partially torn meniscus. That he returned to the hardwood less than a month after the injury (March 27th) is shocking.
Williams played 15:34 and didn’t fill up the stat sheet but made a palpable difference defensively. Tatum led the way for Boston with 39 points, five rebounds, six assists, and six steals. Brown offered 23 points, four rebounds, five assists, and two steals.
Marcus Smart (14) and Payton Pritchard (10) were the only other double-figure contributors.
Brooklyn Nets
While the Celtics got their defensive anchor Williams back the news out of Brooklyn isn’t as promising – – Ben Simmons who was expected to make his Nets debut in Game 4 has been ruled out and regardless if this series continues won’t likely play in the postseason.
Simmons reported to the team after a workout his back was hurting again so at this point he’ll likely be shut down and if Brooklyn is smart sent to a back specialist this offseason.
More concerning than Simmons is how the Celtics have shut down Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving who are essentially the entirety of Brooklyn’s offense.
Durant has scored 23 points (9 of 24), 27 (4 of 17), and 16 (6 of 11) through the three games and uncharacteristically turned the ball over six times in the first two games and five times in Game 3.
Irving was hot in Game 1 scoring 39 points but scored only 10 points (4 of 13) in Game 2, and 16 points (6 of 17) in Game 3. After connecting on 6 of 10 long balls in the opener he has missed all eight attempts since.
Simmons (back) is out indefinitely. Joe Harris (ankle) is out for the season.
