Thursday, February 24th, finds the Boston Celtics facing the Brooklyn Nets in their second of four meetings. The teams split the prior games with Brooklyn winning 123-104 on November 24th and Boston winning 126-91 on February 8th and will host the final meeting on March 6th.
Boston was rolling entering the break but got caught in a trap game losing 111-112 to the Pistons on Wednesday, February 16th while the Nets played on Thursday losing 103-117 to the Wizards.
Last season, the squads played three times with Brooklyn sweeping the regular-season series. The Celtics hold the advantage all-time having won 132 times of the club’s 205 meetings.

If there was a team who probably wished the All-Star Break wasn’t this past weekend it would be the Celtics who were the hottest team in the association.
Mind you losing to the Pistons brought them back down to earth and with Marcus Smart and Robert Williams both addressing injuries the time off likely helped them to get them rested and ready for the stretch run.
The win streak was a mixed bag of opponents with five teams seeded ninth or lower and four top-eight clubs. Of the latter quartet, two wins occurred versus the Nets and Heat who were missing multiple core talents.
Of the nine victories, the most impressive occurred versus the Nuggets and the 76ers with the latter closing the gap between the clubs in the standings.
For the stretch run, the Celtics possess the 10th most difficult strength of schedule with 12 road games and 10 home games remaining facing 13 teams seeded eighth or higher
Marcus Smart (ankle) and Robert Williams III (calf) are both upgraded to probable for Thursday against the Nets.
Brooklyn Nets
The big question in Brooklyn is how long they’ll be waiting for Ben Simmons to make his debut with the club.
The logical thinking would be for the Nets to wait until Kevin Durant is back on the court otherwise they would be throwing him into a situation where he’s trying to run a new team without their two superstars at home.
In terms of their closing schedule, they possess the 13th most difficult strength of schedule to close the season with the majority of their games at home (13) versus road matches (10) meaning they won’t have Kyrie Irving for most of their matches.
Of those, they’ll face 13 teams seeded eighth or higher and six of those matches occur right out of the gate including two matches each against the Raptors and Celtics — the two teams they need to climb over to get back to the sixth seed.
That makes the return date of Durant an intriguing question as his presence could be the difference in whether they can avoid the play-in tournament.
James Johnson (wrist) is questionable for Thursday versus the Celtics. Simmons (conditioning) and Irving (ineligible) are out. Kevin Durant (knee), and Joe Harris (ankle) are all out indefinitely.

Barring a sudden change in availability the Nets won’t have their new Big 3 for half of the first six matches which puts an extra onus on Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and the support staff overachieving (plus the game in Toronto that Irving can’t attend due to protocols).
Even if they return sooner there will still be an integration period required and while Durant changes the landscape of Brooklyn’s productivity it’s not an ideal situation and the longer he remains out the shorter period they have to figure things out.
