2019-2020 NBA Previews – Celtics Odds
Looking for 2019 Boston Celtics Predictions? Last season the Celtics were predicted to be the cream of the Eastern Conference crop. Internal conflict and Kyrie Irving’s inability to lead the youngsters whose wings were clipped to re-integrate Gordon Hayward and a healthy Irving proved to be their downfall.
With a new All-Star point guard and the exit of key defensive frontcourt talents, they’ll look to rediscover their chemistry on and off the court.

Players Who Have Left

- Al Horford
- Terry Rozier
- Marcus Morris
- Aron Baynes

Players Who Have Arrived
- Kemba Walker
- Enes Kanter
- Carsen Edwards (rookie)
- Grant Williams (rookie)
- Romeo Langford (rookie)
- Vincent Poirier (rookie)
- Javonte Green (non-partial guarantee)
Although Irving is a top NBA talent, Walker will arguably be a better overall fit. The more concerning loss for the Celtics is three big men from the frontcourt, particularly Al Horford.
Boston Celtics Strengths:
Coaching Consistency:
The expression time flies applies to Brad Stevens as he enters his seventh season at the Celtics helm. Touted as the boy genius upon his arrival to the NBA he’s amassed an overall record of 270-222. Stevens navigated untimely star injuries two seasons ago and perhaps the most dysfunctional iteration of his tenure last season. The mandate this season will be to find a balance of winning combined with building chemistry on and off the court.

Defense:
Following up on Stevens abilities his greatest prowess during his tenure occurs on the defensive side of the hardwood. In his six seasons, Boston ranked in the upper tier defensively in all but one season (17th) and in the top six on half of those occasions.
Wing Power:
While most clubs seek to add two-way wings Boston is loaded. In fact, Stevens was one of the first in the league to recognize the importance of positionless basketball. If Tatum and Brown can rediscover their 2017-18 production and Gordon Hayward returns closer to his pre-injury self the Celtics arguably have the greatest wing depth in the NBA.
Boston Celtics Weaknesses:
Star Power:
With the loss of both Irving and Horford perhaps the biggest question facing the Celtics is who will take the last shot as the primary scorer particularly in clutch time situations.
[dfads params=’groups=20599&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
As an All-Star Kemba Walker definitely could fit the bill although he struggled in that role in Charlotte. In his 52 clutch time attempts, he connected on 49.6 percent. Granted, he’ll have more options to defer in Boston.
Rim Protection and Defense of the Pick and Roll:
While Enes Kanter has the potential to provide a nightly double-double his defensive chops are limited particularly on pick and roll sets. Without much depth (or experience) upfront that could be the biggest issue for this squad. Sure they have a ton of talented defenders but with the copious talented big men in the East, it could prove problematic.
Boston Celtics Betting Prediction: 44-38
The over/under for wins is set relatively high at 49.5 considering the personnel who exited in the offseason. Although the team should benefit from the absence of Irving and the presence of Walker it will take time to develop chemistry and rectify their frontcourt depth problems.
Factor in the youth and or inexperienced players on this club and how important they’ll be to the big picture. There are five vets on the team — Walker, Hayward, Kanter, Marcus Smart, and Daniel Theis. Brad Wannamaker is 30 but as the third point guard, he’s likely to see precious few minutes.
Though young, Tatum (21) and Brown (23 on Oct. 24) have proven themselves. That’s seven players Stevens can rely on, but he’ll need at least a few others to contribute. Of the other seven contracted players, their average age is 22 years. More concerning is only two have NBA experience. Semi Ojeleye (2 years) and Robert Williams (1 year).
Given these factors, Boston will need time to gel, find their identity and put the young players in a position to succeed. They should still remain in the top four of the East, but if they struggle (particularly upfront) expect Danny Ainge to make a trade prior to the deadline.
