Atlanta won in Phoenix on Saturday night. It was the Hawks sixth win in 14 games, which is a winning streak, if you’re the Atlanta Hawks, or a fan.
The win further separated the Hawks from the real tank contenders, namely Chicago, New York and Cleveland in the East, with Phoenix out West. Atlanta was in it for a while, but it’s now closer to Memphis and New Orleans than it is to those guys competing for the worst record.
But why tank when you’ve got some promising young players in place already? It really looks like the Hawks got a good one in Kevin Huerter at 19th overall in last year’s draft. He’s been just about a lock for at least three or four assists a night lately from the wing in about 25 minutes per game.
He also scores the ball efficiently, both from deep and off the bounce, rebounds, and takes relatively good care of the ball for a rookie playmaker of his size. There’s a lot to like there.
After spending a week out West, the Hawks are finally back East for their sixth and final road game on the trip. They get two days off and some home cooking after this one. That scenario can work both ways: either Atlanta comes out motivated to finish strong or it’s just pooped and lays and egg in Washington.
The Wiz are no longer terrible, nor have they been terrible for some time now. Basically, the terribleness (Charles Barkley voice) stopped when they shut John Wall down, kind of like last season.
Except, unlike last season, Wall isn’t coming back this time. He’s got too many $40 million seasons ahead of him. Tomas Satoransky won’t pile up huge numbers but he plays winning basketball, in the meantime.
Last season, Bradley Beal was a first-time All-Star; this season, he’s a two-time All-Star. Last season, he played all 82 games and scored about 22.5 with four rebounds and four assists per game. This season, he’s played all 52 games and scoring about 24.5, more efficiently, with five rebounds and five assists per.
Beal is signed through 2021 so the Wizards still have a small window to make something work with both he and what will hopefully be a healthy Wall. It’ll be interesting to see if Washington can pull off a quick reload over the summer to try and take advantage.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Washington Wizards NBA Prediction: mmmmmmmm Washington!
I do like the way Atlanta is playing but this is a potential blowout spot. I could totally see Washington lose on its home floor but I like the possibility of the Wiz winning by 15-20. If you can get a nice number on a wider margin, it’s worth a look.
