Tuesday, March 22nd the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks play for the fourth and final time this season. The Knicks won all three prior meetings on November 27th (99-90), December 25th (101-87), and January 15th (117-108).
Both teams last played on Sunday with the Hawks losing 112 -117 to the Pelicans while the Knicks lost 93-108 to the Jazz.
In history, the Hawks own the advantage winning 197 of the clubs’ 383 meetings versus the Knicks. Last season the teams played three times with the Knicks sweeping the series but the Hawks got revenge in the playoffs beating them 4-1 in the first round.
Atlanta Hawks
Whenever these clubs meet it’s impossible not to reflect back to last season when both arguably overachieved. In the 2019 offseason, Atlanta aggressively upgraded their depth to augment stars Trae Young and John Collins but then stumbled to start the season.
When Nate McMillan took over mid-season they caught fire and rode that momentum all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals.
With their depth intact and arguably stronger given the players who were healthy and returning to the rotation everyone kept waiting for them to take off and break out of their funk. It never happened.
So with 11 games remaining, they are clinging to the 10th seed and only secure there based on Washington shutting down Bradley Beal and seemingly electing to tank the stretch run.
What makes the Hawks’ situation so frustrating is their struggles are self-inflicted. Instead of using last season as motivation to improve the only takeaway possible is the youngsters expected to automatically replicate their success this season without putting in the work and effort necessary particularly defensively.
They could learn from teams like the Suns and Grizzlies who used their brief success and subsequent failure as motivation to become better and have – in Phoenix’s case since the Disney bubble and for Memphis after a taste of the play-in and first-round exit last year.
John Collins (plantar fasciitis) is out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
As for the Knicks, they entered last season preaching a rebuild and patience but got out to a hot start and rode it through to a homecourt seed but hampered by a lack of depth and offense lost to the Hawks in the first round.
They elected to upgrade offensively to fix part of their issues without success and also regressed defensively. Although they haven’t been mathematically eliminated they are virtually a lock to be lottery-bound.
Nerlens Noel (foot) is questionable for Tuesday versus the Hawks. Derrick Rose (ankle) is out indefinitely. Cam Reddish (shoulder) is done for the season while Kemba Walker and the Knicks mutually agreed to shut him down for the season with the likelihood he’ll be traded or bought out in the offseason.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. New York Knicks NBA Prediction
With the pressure of winning off, the Knicks have won five of their last eight matches while the Hawks have won four of six. Atlanta is the team more desperate to win but for the Knicks being able to play spoiler to ensure Atlanta remains in the 10th seed is appealing if for no other reason to get revenge for last season.
Recalling Young standing center court at MSG with his finger to his lips last season if I’m Tom Thibodeau I plaster that picture all over the locker room. Imagine the Knicks winning and instead of shaking hands walk off the court with their fingers to their lips.
Yeah, you know what they say about payback!
