Wednesday, November 2nd the Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks play in the first of four meetings this season. New York hosts again on December 7th while Atlanta will host on January 20th and February 15th.
Atlanta arrives following a thrashing by the Raptors (109-139) on Monday while the Knicks last played Sunday losing 108-121 the Cavaliers in a game that was much closer than the final score.
In history, the Hawks own the advantage of winning 198 of the clubs’ 384 meetings versus the Knicks. Last season the teams played four times with the Knicks winning three of the four contests.
Atlanta Hawks
If you recall my preview for the Raptors and Hawks I highlighted we hadn’t seen Atlanta play many elite clubs yet and their four wins were all courtesy of tanking teams.
Well, if their 139-109 loss to Toronto wasn’t just a blip there is much work to be done by Nate McMillan and his charges. Trae Young had an off night coughing up the ball 10 times but he also was struggling with the Raptors’ size.
Repeatedly he was flopping and seeking a bailout from the refs and after a while even if you’re not a fan of him or the Hawks you kind of felt bad for him that he felt his only option was flopping.
Now the reality is he has a choice to do what Stephen Curry did by getting into the gym and getting stronger and working on his defense. And perhaps that’s why I quickly veered away from feeling sorry for him.
Young is not invested on the defensive end of the floor which is all fine and dandy when you’re winning but if this club keeps losing to the better teams wait for the discontent to leak from the locker room of the players like John Collins and DeAndre Hunter regarding their shot attempts or lack of defensive effort from EVERYONE on the court.
The Hawks allow 116.5 points per 100 possessions ranking 22nd and opponents are shooting 46.4 percent from the field (tied 14th) and 33.6 percent from the perimeter (9th).
Offensively, Atlanta score 116 points per 100 possessions (13th) while shooting 48.1% from the field (4th) and 36.0 from the perimeter (15th).
Bogdan Bogdanovic (knee) is out indefinitely.
New York Knicks
Like the Hawks, the Knicks have benefitted by facing some tanking teams early. In fact, their three wins are against those teams and their three losses are against the tougher foes.
However, the difference with the Knicks is they aren’t claiming to be in the hunt for a home-court seed or an NBA title this season.
They made the move to add Jalen Brunson who has DEFINITELY made them a better all-around club they’re still a few assets away from being in the upper echelon but at least they know it.
Tom Thibodeau’s fingerprints are all over his team from a defensive perspective as they allow 115.7 points per 100 possessions ranking 19th,
Opponents are shooting 42.9 percent from the field which is the second-best mark by defenders while teams shoot 33.2 percent from the perimeter also an impressive 6th best mark.
Offensively, the Knicks score 117.8 points per 100 possessions (6th), shooting 46.8% from the field (tied 15th), and 33.8% from the perimeter (23rd).
Quentin Grimes (foot) is questionable for Wednesday.

If the Hawks hadn’t been spanked by the Raptors would they have been the underdogs in this match? I wonder.
One big difference between these clubs is the Knicks ARE playing defense. Case in point they pushed the Grizzlies to overtime and were much closer than the score shows in both the Bucks and Cavaliers’ losses.
After watching the Hawks on Monday – a big takeaway was the Raptors manhandled them and not just Trae Young. The Hawks have plenty of talent but the only player displaying any semblance of grit or toughness is Onyeka Okongwu and he’s banged up.
