Friday, April 8th, finds the Atlanta Hawks and Miami Heat meet for the fourth and final time this season. Miami leads the season series 2-1 with victories on January 12th (115-91) and 14th (124-118) while the Hawks won the January 21st (110-108) match.
The Hawks last played Wednesday finishing a back-to-back set via a 118-103 victory versus the Wizards while the Heat pummeled the Hornets 144-114 on Tuesday.
Last season, the squads played three times with the Hawks winning two of the three contests. The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 72 of their 129 matches.
Atlanta Hawks
The Hawks have cemented that they’ll be one of the play-in tournament participants but haven’t locked down which seed they’ll have.
All four teams (Cavaliers, Nets, Hornets) are vying to be in the seventh or eighth spot since it affords them a second opportunity in the play-in tournament if they lose their first match.
Conversely, the loser of the ninth-tenth seed play-in game eliminates you from that team from the playoffs.
Atlanta got a big win versus the Nets on Saturday but had already lost the tiebreaker versus Brooklyn. Three nights later the red-hot Raptors ended their five-game winning streak, a feat they accomplished earlier in the season when the Hawks were on a seven-game win streak.
After this game, the Hawks will finish their season in Houston. As for their play-in counterparts, Cleveland (@Nets, Bucks), Brooklyn (Cavaliers, Pacers), and Hornets (@Bulls, WIzards) each have two games remaining.
Atlanta could still get the seventh seed if they win out and the Cavaliers lose out (and are also up a game on Brooklyn) because they own the tiebreak versus Cleveland.
While Atlanta currently possesses the tiebreak versus Charlotte if the Hornets win their final two matches and the Hawks lose one of their last two games the teams will be tied and need to utilize conference win percentage as a tiebreaker.
Lou Williams (back) is questionable for Friday. John Collins (plantar fasciitis) is out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
Although idle on Thursday, the Heat clinched the Eastern Conference title by virtue of the Celtics and 76ers both losing. They will close out the regular season on the road versus their Southeast Florida rivals the Orlando Magic.
What makes this game compelling is the Heat don’t know who their first-round opponent will be. If they rest their core it would improve the Hawks’ chances of victory which is why that scenario is less likely because beating the Hawks would keep them seeded beneath the Nets.
That’s significant because if Brooklyn finishes with the seventh or eighth seed the smart money is on them winning to cement the seventh seed and thereby avoid playing Miami in the first round.
The injury report is extensive but the core talents aren’t on the list although nine others are.
PJ Tucker (calf) is out indefinitely. Omer Yurtseven (illness), Gabe Vincent (toe), Caleb Martin (calf), Markieff Morris (hip), Dewayne Dedmon (ankle), and Haywood Highsmith (hip) are all questionable for Friday.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
A tricky game to project in terms of who will suit up for Miami and how invested they are in playing a role in the play-in seeding. None of the top four seeds would admit to a preference for avoiding the Nets but it’s definitely a factor.
My guess is Miami will seek the victory to try to control the seeding.
