Game two between the eighth-seeded Atlanta Hawks and top East seed Miami Heat tips off on Tuesday, April 19th. The Heat took the opening game 115-91.
Miami won the 2021-22 regular-season series 3-1 with victories on January 12th (115-91), January 14th (124-118), and April 8th (113-108) while the Hawks won the January 21st (110-108) match.
The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 73 of their 130 matches. This is the third time the clubs are meeting in the postseason with Atlanta winning both prior series 3-2 in 1994 and 4-3 in 2009.
Atlanta Hawks
After getting all the way to the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals the Hawks entered this season expecting to be among the top seeds but stumbled out of the gate. They closed strong down the stretch though and seemed poised to be a potential playoff spoiler.
With one of the deepest teams ironically Atlanta has been hit by injuries at the worst time, particularly to their big men. Clint Capella got injured in the final play-in game causing him to miss Game 1 and will likely be out at least a week or two.
Fortunately, John Collins made a timely return after missing the past 16 games due to plantar fasciitis and an injured finger. He subbed in off the bench playing 21 minutes posting 10 points and four rebounds.
Rising superstar Trae Young produced a campaign likely to land him on many All-NBA ballots and arrived having scored 38 points and dishing nine dimes in the clinching game versus the Cavaliers.
But in Game 1, Young struggled with Miami’s defensive focus isolated primarily on him scoring only one field goal. (1 of 12) and was also limited in his ability to move the ball with only four assists.
Bogdan Bogdanovic also struggled shooting 0 of 8. Danilo Gallinari led the Hawks in scoring with 17 points while DeAndre Hunter (14) and Kevin Knox II (10) were the only other double-figure scorers.
Lou Williams (back) is questionable for Tuesday while Capella (knee) is out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
While the Hawks had to win two play-in games to clinch the eighth seed the Heat were resting or practicing in preparation for this series and that proved beneficial as Miami jumped on Atlanta in the first quarter building a six-point lead that ballooned to 19 at the half.
Jimmy Butler was the only Heat player to log more than 30 minutes leading the way with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
While Tyler Herro and Max Strus have typically provided the 3-point sniper services, it was Duncan Robinson who was hot hitting eight of his nine attempts and registering 27 points.
Veterans added in the offseason proved beneficial as PJ Tucker offered 16 points and Kyle Lowry was the other double-figure score with 10 points and nine assists.
Although no one was overly taxed in Game 1, several players are questionable for Tuesday including Bam Adebayo (quad), Gabe Vincent (toe), Tucker (calf), Markieff Morris (hip), Dewayne Dedmon (ankle), and Haywood Highsmith (hip).
NBA Betting Trends:
- Atlanta is 9-3 ATS in their last 12 games.
- Miami is 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games.
- The total has gone UNDER in 7 of Atlanta’s last 8 games.
- The total has gone OVER in 4 of Miami’s last 6 games.
- The Hawks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 Conference Quarterfinals games.
- Heat are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
Clearly, the rest helped the Heat in Game 1 while the Hawks never found a rhythm, especially with Young struggling. Expect Atlanta to approach this game with much more aggression and a focus on defense.
If all the Heat players listed as questionable are out that would be problematic, especially Adebayo who would be the key defender on Collins and/or Onyeka Okongwu.
It’s not a must-win situation for the Hawks but they’ll be motivated to even up the series before heading to Atlanta for two. Despite that desire and the potential Heat players sidelined, they’ve been one of the best teams at winning with whoever they have available.
With that, I’ll take the Hawks to keep it closer than the seven-point spread, but the Heat to take the 2-0 series lead.
