Sunday, April 17th, the eighth-seeded Atlanta Hawks and top East seed Miami Heat tip-off their first-round series.
Miami won the regular-season series 3-1 with victories on January 12th (115-91), January 14th (124-118), and April 8th (113-108) while the Hawks won the January 21st (110-108) match.
The Hawks won both their play-in games to cement the eighth seed first taking down the Hornets 132-103 and then defeating the Cavaliers on the road 107-101.
Miami nabbed the East’s top seed by virtue of handling COVID outbreaks and injuries better than any of their counterparts and get the easier path to the Conference Finals by virtue of that top seed.
They’ll face a Hawks team who struggles on the road missing possibly both of their core big men and if successful would benefit from a second-round series versus either the 76ers or Raptors who are destined for a first-round battle.
The middle portion of the bracket is much tougher with the Nets and Celtics locked into a tough first-round and the winner likely facing the defending champion Bucks in the second round.
The Heat holds the all-time record having bested the Hawks in 73 of their 130 matches. This is the third time the clubs are meeting in the postseason with Atlanta winning both prior series 3-2 in 1994 and 4-3 in 2009.
Atlanta Hawks
Trae Young lives for the big stage as he displayed in his dominant performance versus the Cavaliers scoring 32 of his 38 points in the second half to take control of the match.
The trio of Bogdan Bogdanovic (19), Danilo Gallinari (14), and DeAndre Hunter (10) were the other double-figure contributors.
Moving forward the concern is Clint Capela who was injured on a play when he grabbed Evan Mobley around the neck pulling him to the ground – it was more of a flagrant foul than 90 percent of the ones typically doled out but wasn’t deemed a flagrant likely because Capela got hurt.
Mobley’s head hit Capela hyperextending his knee and sending him to the lockers not to return. With the Hawks already missing John Collins this would be a big hit for Atlanta who’ll have to turn to Onyeka Okungwu, Kevin Love, or the seldom-used Gorgui Dieng to fill in at center.
Lou Williams (back) was downgraded to out while John Collins (foot/finger) was upgraded to questionable for Sunday. Capella (knee) is out indefinitely.
Miami Heat
In the April 8th game versus the Hawks, Bam Adebayo led the way for the Heat with 24 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Vets Jimmy Butler and Kyle Lowry offered 20 and 16 points respectively.
Tyler Herro was an assist shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine assists while Gabe Vincent was the other double-digit scorer.
Perimeter shooting and defense will be a key in this series with Miami looking to replicate their effort from the last meeting when they shot 42.3 percent and held the Hawks to 23.5 percent from deep.
Bam Adebayo (quarantine), Gabe Vincent (toe), and PJ Tucker (calf) are probable while Markieff Morris (hip), Dewayne Dedmon (ankle), and Haywood Highsmith (hip) are all questionable for Sunday.

- .The Heat are 35-16 ATS in their last 51 games playing on 3 or more days rest.
Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat NBA Prediction:
The big question is rest versus rust for the Heat who haven’t played since April 10th and many of their core sat out with only Gabe Vincent and Duncan Robinson playing that last game.
Ten days off is a long rest so it may take the Heat a quarter or so to find their rhythm although they’ve been practicing leading up to this match.
With the tip-off at 1:00 p.m., it won’t be surprising if this is a low-scoring game akin to the Jazz-Mavericks effort on Saturday. With that, I’m picking the Heat to win but shying away from the 6.5 spread.
