The road Hawks enter this contest coming off their first loss of the year. After two wins to tip off 2022-23, Atlanta fell on Sunday at home to the Charlotte Hornets, 126-109.
The hometown Pistons are coming off two straight losses, most recently a 119-98 trouncing Tuesday night at the hands of Bradley Beal (more specifically Kyle Kuzma and Kristaps Porzingis) and the Washington Wizards.

Entering Wednesday, Atlanta is scoring 111.3 points per game, led by Trae Young’s 25.3 points per contest. The team’s total is good enough to put the Hawks at 18th in the league in scoring.
Defensively, Atlanta is giving up 110.3 points per night, a number that’s good enough to earn the No. 13 ranking leaguewide and a positive point differential on the season.
A positive point differential is something 14 teams have as of this writing Tuesday night.
The headline in Atlanta right now might be more about what it doesn’t have than what’s actually happening on the court. Bogdan Bogdanović has yet to make his season debut after an offseason knee procedure, and it’s not clear when he expects to hit the floor.
Atlanta continues to label him day-to-day, but the latest on Tuesday night is that he is once again OUT for Wednesday’s contest against Detroit.
Detroit Pistons
The Pistons have been on the wrong end of some bad blowouts to start 2022-23. After a 113-109 win on opening night against the Orlando Magic, Detroit has dropped three straight to the New York Knicks, Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards. They lost those games by 24, nine and 24 points, respectively.
The biggest disappointment about Tuesday’s loss to Washington is that if the Pistons really wanted to pounce they missed their chance. Bradley Beal sustained a back injury (that appears to be minor) and was limited to just over 21 minutes.
There haven’t been many signs Detroit is looking to pounce against anybody this season, which is probably a sign they belong in the shameless tank-for-Victor Wembanyama category.
There could be more blowout losses to come for this group…a lot more.

In fact, Detroit’s defense could even make the Hawks look like a decent three-point shooting team again after really struggling in that category so far. But the Pistons’ offense certainly should help with the team averaging just better than 108 points per game—a number that places them in the bottom 10 of the league.
In the midst of Small Sample Size Theatre, I’m 1-1 picking the Hawks against the spread this season. We hit once at -8 against Orlando, and the loss was picking -10.5 versus the Hornets in what ended up being a bad, weird, no-good outing for Atlanta.
I’m picking the Hawks again here, and I think -7 will look mighty conservative when the final buzzer sounds.
The Hawks aren’t world beaters at the point, but they appear on a completely different path than the Pistons, and that’s important even fewer than five games in.
Hawks don’t mess around in this one. Atlanta wins big.
