Friday, April 15th the Atlanta Hawks and the Cleveland Cavaliers play the final Eastern Conference play-in game to determine the eighth seed who’ll face the top-seeded Miami Heat in the opening round of the playoffs.
Cleveland finished ranked eighth and arrive at this match following a 108-115 loss to the Brooklyn Nets who secured the seventh seed and a date with the Boston Celtics.
Atlanta arrives having pummelled the Hornets (132-103) in the single-game elimination between the ninth and tenth play-in seeds.
The Hawks won the season series 3-1 with victories on December 31st (125-109), February 15th (124-116), and March 31st (118-107) while the Cavaliers won October 23rd (134-107).
The clubs have met three prior times in the postseason with the Cavs winning each time in a sweep. The three series were in 2009, 2015, and 2016.
Atlanta Hawks
Following two competitive play-in games between the 7-8 seeds, the games on Wednesday were anything but competitive. The Hawks thrashed the Hornets who played as if it was just another regular-season game.
In contrast, Atlanta resembled the squad that made the deep postseason run in 2021 reaching the Eastern Conference Finals.

In the win, six Hawks scored in double-figures led by Trae Young who posted a double-double of 24 points and 11 assists but shot 8 of 24 from the field and 1 of 7 from deep. Clint Capela (15 points, 17 rebounds) also registered a double-double.
Atlanta took an eight-point lead into the break but truly won the game in the third quarter outscoring Charlotte 42-24.
While the Atlanta Hawks got no resistance from the Hornets they won’t have it quite so easy against the Cavaliers who pride themselves on their defense.
Things will be even more difficult for Trae Young and his group if Jarrett Allen returns as is projected. In the season series versus the Cavs, Young averaged 32.5 points and nine assists.
Lou Williams (back) is downgraded to out while Bogdan Bogdanovic (ankle) is questionable for Friday. John Collins (finger/foot) remains listed as out indefinitely.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Although the Nets were the heavy favorites in the Cavs initial play-in game aside from a terrible first quarter (20-40) J.B Bickerstaff’s squad won the next three quarters outscoring Brooklyn 88-75.
On the surface, this match seems to favor the Hawks but Darius Garland missed two of the four games in the series and they could be getting big man Jarrett Allen back for this must-win game.
Allen participated in three of the four matches against the Hawks averaging 15.3 points and 9.6 rebounds.
Jarrett Allen (finger) is probable for Friday. Dean Wade (knee) and Collin Sexton (knee) are out for the season.

Free Atlanta Hawks vs. Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Prediction
This season versus the Hawks, the Cavaliers averaged 110.5 points shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 29.8 percent from the perimeter. In comparison, Atlanta averaged 117.7 points shooting 46.5 percent from the field and 39.3 percent from the perimeter.
The glass and paint will be one of the keys to this game with the Hawks averaging 45.5 rebounds, 12.5 offensive boards, and 3.7 blocks while the Cavs averaged 46.5 rebounds, 12.2 offensive boards, and 5.5 blocks.
Allen would make a decided impact if he returns while the Hawks sure could use Collins but he remains listed as out, but fortunately, they still have Capela to man the paint.
Despite the Hawks being favored they’ll need to break the play-in home-court advantage trend to capture the win. Atlanta struggled on the road this season (16-25) but was much-improved post-break (6-8).
The big question is how much of an impact Allen can make as he noted the concern with the finger is on the defensive end which is the primary area the Cavs have struggled without him.
Although the Cavs were the East’s Cinderella team sadly it looks like their season will end without them reaching the playoffs.
